Bought a reel over the winter .Seller swear to me that reel was fished only once .... Pulled out Friday to go fishing , but ...can't turn the handle .I open the reel no water inside , but when I inspected side cover with main gear , that the problem were  .Main gear was hardly turns inside side cover . I watched tutorial on YouTube , but I guess they are upgrade the reel  , but did  not upgrade their videos .. this new side cover does not have that that retainer that hold the all assembly .

I contacted ged and he was so kind to explain to me how to de assemble side cover , but I guess I am not mechanically educated enough to understand terminology . He said that he is going to explain more tomorrow , but meanwhile anybody has a schematic of G2 reels cover that I can understand it .

Thank you all .

As seen in the schematic and in the video, the retaining clip is located under the seal (part 6 shown in schematic).   To see it, that seal would need to be removed.

Also, there is also an anti-reverse clutch on that gear.  Therefore it will only turn in one direction.  Will it turn in at least  in one direction?

Also, have you ever taken off the side cover prior to this?

I de assemble the reel completely accept the side cover that where I had a problem .I reaped the rubber seal and didn't find number 8 under it .... That where I stock . Ged mentioned that G2 reels have a little different construction of that part without retaining nut . Wondering how is it ?

I'm sure that ged will chime in but I would disassemble the side cover and see what the internals look like.  It looks like a bit of rust showing on the main gear shaft in the above picture.

If you are sure you have all of the rubber seal removed and there is no retainer, a bit of WD40 and a few light taps on the shaft should dislodge it.

Some rust may be binding it up.

Just back from the canal.

The main gear has a retainer under that seal. That is the most expensive seal on the reel and it needs to be destroyed to remove it.

I “picked” one out last week and threw it away.

Some really early G1 main gear did not have the slot for the retainer. Those gears are noisy when you apply side pressure when reeling. I doubt there is a G2 reel with that gear.
