zeke04
I saw Ron Arra do it more than once with a conventional on a Zziplex rod with a 5 ounce casting weight. The reel was customized for distance casting with 12 lb mono.
ged
Two locals have been rumored to do this, Ron Arra and Dave. In casting competition people cast much further. “Fishing” and “Casting” are different situations. mro

Joe G
2 hours ago, oldgoat said: Ask Joe G. Ah yes. When was that? 15-20 + years back, Peter? You entered our casting competition called Meet Me in The Middle, by entrusting me with your $10 entrance fee. We were staged mainland side at the RR Bridge, and you drove over the Bourne bridge and positioned yourself on the Cape side of the canal next to the RR Bridge and casted toward us. We all witnessed your cast. I'm unsure who casted towards you, maybe Donny Willis, from the mainland side to "meet you in the middle", but the two lures did not hook up with each other. Regardless, we all had a good time. What rumors you may have heard to the contrary, I did turn in your $10 entrance fee to the competition organizers. The late JF Basser was key in getting us all together for this event. MikeMc and Angler #1
zak-striper
The more important question is did someone cast all the way across with an actual lure and not a casting weight. I would imagine a 5oz crippled herring would be the closest lure to a casting weight. Edited May 28 by zak-striper
Angler #1
It was not very long ago when another gentleman that worked at Red Top with regular fishing gears not only cast across the canal at the west end , but the east end as well At least that is what I was told from some one observing. The low reel placement allows the caster to fine tune the mag control during the cast. Peace and Prayers I've never seen him put a plug all the way across at the east end, but I've seen him throw at least 3/4ths of the way. But he was casting at what's probably the widest part of the canal. I imagine he could pull it off at the west end. As I recall, he had a real beast of a rod, 12', and he probably was the only guy who could load it to cast. I understand he has snapped a few Lami’s in his day with his powerful casts.

Either Dr. Karras or Paul Karnicki built Zziplex rod with a tricked out Abu reel. We were standing by the RR bridge on Bell Rd and I was casting it, trying to hit the abutment on the other side. On a couple casts I had the distance, but missed the abutment by several feet. If my memory serves me, someone else took a turn, and snapped off the 5oz casting weight with about 75 yards of line, and it crash landed either in the ACOE compound or somewhere in B Bay.
