Very nice BB. I wish the same. Just one more day of fishing and BSing. Good times with this guy. This was just before he got shipped out to Korea.

I've been looking through old photo albums this week, trying to pare them down and consolidate.  Photo from that era into the sixties and maybe a little later, everyone had a cigarette in their hands

Couple of my dad, WWII era. Forgot about these, weren't the ones I was looking for. Brother may have them or there buried somewhere.

He had a few stories about boot camp, the one I remember was about the time he went AWOL.  When he was a little kid he had a few ear operations which left him without an eardrum in his right ear. He never went swimming with us because he couldn't risk getting water in that ear.

While he was in camp he ended up with an ear infection. The army doctors would irrigate the ear only making things worse and sending the infection deeper. The old man was stubborn and could tolerate a fair amount of pain, but this sent him over the edge and he ended up traveling to NY to see his ear doctor. Compared to today medicine was in the dark ages, but his ear guy who was one of the top ENTs at the time would treat him with sulfa drugs.I think they blew it into the ear.

Doctor wrote a note to the CO explaining the situation. Dad gets called in to see the CO and he says I hear you were AWOL. Dad explains the situation and gives him the note. Small world, turns out his CO Or the head medical officer went to school  (Med?) with my father's doctor, calls him on the phone and catches up, doc gets him up to speed on the use of sulfa drugs. Dad ended up with a medical discharge. I think he was in the airborne division, he had some patches and he shouldn't have been jumping out of plane with that ear problem

Great pics!  My sister took my dads WWII pics to a shop in Freehold to make copies for all of us kids. The owner took the pics along with the deposit $ and closed up shop.  His name was Garth and if I ever run into him god help him. They were pictures from his 1st company command after OCS at Ft Monmouth 6/41 and one of him passing the parade stand returning Gen. Mark Clarks salute after taking  Anzio. Later that day Gen Clark pinned a Silver Star and Purple Heart on dad.
