My toyota isnt a daily driver I commute to work differently yet my highway mileage toyota gets upward of 17mpg. Used to own several Jeeps as well and everything of that size seems to get all in the same range. If I end up spending a few extra bucks on gas I'm sure I'll save it on maintenance down the road. Nowhere, I'm just entertaining the possibility that a 1/4 ton gets better city mileage than a 1/2 ton, even if the highway mileage is invariable terrible, as you pointed out. I've owned one tons that would do 17 MPG on the highway, can not for the life of me figure out why nobody can build a 1/4 ton that will do much better, or why I would want such a "truck". I've had a new 4runner for 2 1/2 years. Now Smithtown Toyota is keen to buy it back. Riverhead Toyota has asked twice. Production problems? S Hook
I would look at Subaru. AWD. great reliability, relatively cheap, and 30+ mpg. Forester or outback.

I commonly drive a lot for work and school, so i want something that can do that while also having the ability to drive on the beach. What kind of cars do you use, or recommend? Do the beaches you're looking to drive on require 4WD? Not AWD, but 4WD.

Jim McFeeley
I would say a passport or maybe the souped up rav4 4. My pilot was great in the sand as well just lacked a little clearance but it was never a problem .
gregory m
Yeah they require 4wd to get a permit otherwise i would try my awd Good to know that the pilot did well

Because I had a pilot that was Awd but could be switched so all 4 wheels turned. With the awd systems today that doesn't make sense to me Edited May 24 by Jim McFeeley

New York State does, but I doubt I'd be refused a permit with an AWD machine either. Any New Yorkers who know from experience?

Ironically, they are still going for almost new prices so I don’t know why anyone would drop that much on a used car when they can get a new for close to the same price
