Black bear in Fall River

Not about bears, but still curious.

Years ago while scouting turkey in the preseason, I had a deer charge me at least a half dozen times.   I'm walking down this old trail, and a deer appears out of nowhere.  Stares right at me, stomps her foot a half dozen times, grunts, and runs right at me, verring off at the last moment. She'd run past me, turn around, and do it all over again and again.

Finally she just ambled off.  I had no idea what that was all about?

She may have had a fawn nearby, it would have been the right time of year.  Does will stash their young fawns in cover and then try to lead a potential predator away from the area.  Perhaps this is what she was doing.

That was my first thought.  But it was mid April.  Maybe a bit early, maybe not?  I went in the opposite direction so I wouldn't disturb a fawn if it was there.

Maybe someone told him about the food at Antonio's. ;)

I see a lot of them.

This one was the only one to ever to give me pause.

Not a goofy bird feeder bear, this was a situation where they usually bolt instantly.

He did not, circled a bit and finally moved off.

Bit of a caveat that goes against the grain -- "Though black bears rarely kill or seriously injure people, when they do, it's most often the result of predatory behavior by males inside their wilderness home ranges and not by females protecting cubs or animals defending a carcass" [https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/article/lone-predatory-black-bears-responsible-most-human-attacks/2011/05/11/ ; http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jwmg.72/abstract]

Very rare, but it's worth knowing / being prepared for if you're in high density areas!

Fizzy Fish takes excellent Polaroids of wild life.  I suspect we’ll see a few snaps of the bear shortly.

Thanks Joe, but they are not Polaroids.  :D
