I'm  just itchy. Those hot days we had a week or so ago got me all wanting.

They might be around already, but will be slow... and BIG. I've went once beginning of May and caught a few couple years back in MA waters. Imagine if the water is warm enough already, they'll be around.

Well, don’t know about down where you’re at, but they’re pretty active already up here in NJ!

Go in the back skinny waters, it’s not killer crabbing yet, but almost getting consistent!

and yes, they are quite big and surprisingly full of meat, so they must be eating quite well lol!

We were getting them with the fishing rod the other day flounder, fishing!

Darn it if they didn’t keep grabbing the  mackerel strips lol!

And we already have sheddar crab up our way too now, seems everything is well ahead of schedule this year!

We were getting water temps in the mid 60s the other day, way in the back!

So, what are the water temps like in your location?

Not sure. Haven't been out yet.

I do recall  on some past spring outings seeing some chonky crabs this time of year.

Eta.  According to the web. Average water temp for LIS on 5/20/23 is 59degrees.

seagulls on my dock had no problem finding blue crabs all winter

I prefer peace. But if trouble must come, let it come in my time, so that my children can live in peace.

Traps. What's  your favorite?

As fun as handlines are its  a 2man job. I fish alone alot so it's  traps mostly.

Right now I'm  using cheap hoop traps with a cotton mesh.  They're  kinda flimzy  but catch.   Are the steel mesh worth the upgrade?

Bonus is They're  pretty lightweight so some of those marsh treks don't  bog me down.

Then there is this.

It's marketed as a castable trap.   With a pool cue rod and heavy line.  I think it might fit a niche for the shore based angler.

appears to be CT legal.  As do the west coast snaring traps.  images.jpeg.4499a56cb7a85b2e4f8b4176b5d8c6a3.jpeg

Blue crabs! Soon! Maybe after Father’s Day!
mill leave some for the rest of you.

The lowest fishing there is, but maximum fun.

I still use the “pool cue rod” and chicken drumsticks.  Need a bit of lead to handle current where I go. Also go occasionally at night with the net and spotlight see Em cruising up the small creeks or hanging on pilings. The one part of night outings I can’t stand. Rats!

Bit of an offshoot.  But don't feel like another thread is needed.

Jonah crabs.   Anyone ever catch one from shore?  Are they mainly a deeper water catch.

I have never seen one locally.  Only in fish markets, and hardly ever see them in local ones.
