For banging around the rocks and wading, I use a Century Kevlar N’oreaster with a ZB25.  The SME serves as my open beach distance caster, which is why I’m considering replacing the VSX150 with a Certate 5K.

As far as why pay so much for a single rod?  I like nice things.  I figure it’s no different than people spending almost $400 for a pair  of VS pliers.  Some can justify it, others cannot.  To each their own…. It’s all good!

I love spending money on fancy fishing stuff however rods break more often than reels.. There is no such a thing as user error when you break a reel. Visit the Century web site and you will see a list of multiple scenarios of rod breakage, not just slamming the rod in car doors. Risking over $1000 on a fishing rod is not for me..One of the breakage scenario in the list for a breakage is the fishing line wrapped around the tip before a cast. I lost few GRS plugs when I encountered this scenario casting plugs at night using my Legend rod.

It’s all good man, do what works for you.  If you’re prone to breaking stuff get a rod with a warranty that gives you peace of mind.  Clearly that’s St. Croix for you.  I haven’t broken a rod in over 25 years (user error), so I’m more than comfortable with my spending decisions.  Like I said earlier…  Some can justify it, others cannot.  To each their own…. It’s all good!

I don't do much open beach casting and distance is not a major concern of mine.  I cannot toss an eel that far, yet somehow they catch fish.  I also like nice things and own 2 pairs of VS pliers and 4 VS reels; so that certainly is not an issue.  For $1200 I can get 3 GSB 132-1M rods built for me and those rods get the job done, are very durable, cast well, are generally light when built properly and will handle anything the New England surf scene can throw at it.

It all started last year during a terrible thunderstorm, when I locked myself out of the house. Shelving myself with a large piece of sheet metal, I ran for cover under the tallest tree I could find!

At this level, we’re all nerdy gear heads in one form or another.  BTW, I got my factory build brand new for $950 last fall.  A full ODM Evolution build cones in at around the same ballpark.

Speaking of light weight, mine comes in at a mere 11.03 oz, which is why my upgraded VSX150 balances so well on this 11 footer.

Nah… You are not the common angler and you enjoy building your own rods..

I just visited the ODM web site. A blank cost is $390 so how did you get the idea of same ball part?

I am not an expert in rod building just curios..

Blanks only the starting point.  Rod has lots of other parts to it and someone’s gotta put them all together

A very good point.

The ODM evolution blanks are listed on ODM web site for $390.

The SME elite blanks are listed on Century web site  for $863.

Same ballpark?

Like I said, I was fortunate enough get my factory SME for $950 last fall.  Christmas deals are a wonderful thing.  So yes, for me, same ballpark.

The pure math does not support you.

Century SME Elite 11’3” blank $863

Century SME Elite rod -$1074

The difference is $211.

ODM evolution 11’6” blank $390

ODM rod built with the same component as the SME elite:

$390+$211= $601

$690 vs $950 far from being same ballpark..

If you want to buy a similar length ODM Evolution with similar components you’ll be in the $900 range.

Century probably discounts the blank when you buy a complete rod from them.  They’re not stacking profit on a complete rod on top of profit on the blank.

You’re very odd in the way you like to nit pick ad nauseam.  Do you think a blank and premium components build themselves?  Get a quote from Lou Caruso or any other reputable rod builder for a ODM Evolution build and get back to me…

And I just looked back at my records..  I actually paid $910.  My math is spot on.
