I’ve been looking to acquire the century surf machine elite 12 3/4-5oz but never had a century rod. I was wondering how does it compare to a CTS vapor trail or a Odm frontier X. Any feedback would be great. Thanks

There's no comparison at all. The Elite will out perform both those rods in every aspect.

The 3/4-5 throws its entire range with minimal effort.  Has lots of power. Fantastic sensitivity and most importantly it will be the same rod 10 years from now as the day you got it.

Where are you located?  We have a shop in Avalon, NJ.  If you're not too far stop on over and test cast one.

Hi Uriel918,

This is a Hi-end rod. I think the rod is unparalleled in performance sensitivity and durability ! You won't regret it when you buy it. You choose Century suf machine elite like you choose a super car.  All the best feelings will come to you.

I don’t know if what you write is really accurate but I do know that in the cost category  the SME out perform the other two rods by far…

If a person can't achieve more distance with a 11' rod over a 10' rod they need casting lessons...lol

No doubt, SME are expensive,  but they are a rod that will last a lifetime. No loss of performance whatsoever  over the years. You get what you pay for.

What he says in the second “paragraph” is true of any high end rod. The SME is leaps and bounds over pretty much every rod out there in terms of technology. Personally I would never buy one because in my opinion, their warranty is underwhelming garbage for what you pay for a rod. Good customer service though. The 11’ SME will throw its entire range and sensitivity is unmatched. I’ve handled friend’s SME’s and they have a ton of backbone. Just not for me the way I fish because I would probably break it the way I fight and lean into fish.

The Frontier is 11’6”. If you are so sure the rod will last lifetime then why does the warranty only good for one year?

The warranty is as follows. This has been discussed numerous times on here. 1yr no questions asked. After that it's a limited lifetime. So basically after a year if you shut your rod in the car door you have to pay for a replacement.  If it breaks under normal usage we replace it.

We are a small company and can't afford to replace a 10 yr old rod that was shut in the car/truck door. If that's what you're  looking for Century is not for you.

If you want a rod that won't get sloppy and lose it's distance 5 years later then you want a Century.

I own a bunch of 12’ rods like StCroix legend, CTS S8 and AFAW Universal. All these rods are over 10 years old and none of them got sloppy or lost distance..

I've had them too.......but now i have an 11' SME and won't look back.  With the warranty and all, i won't look back.  Why do you continue to harp on the warranty??  There are a dozen threads where you keep b*tching about this................the answer is, Century is not for you!!

Simply because last year in Mexico a bird snapped the tip of my Century FMA which I bought in BST and in 2019 in Mexico I broke another used FMA which  I also bought here. I can’t explain the reason why that one broke. It was in front of Cabo surfcaster during a cast. Last year rod broke when a bird snapped the line and the braid was wrapped around the tip. I bought both rods for less than $300 each. I would be very upset if I paid over $1000 each.

And you are partially right, a new SME is not for me but I would not mind spending $300 for a used one.

I can tell you that the later Century models, such as the SME, are made a hell of a whole lot better with state of the art technology than the older models.

Furthermore, you keep ignoring AFMike’s explanation of his current day’s Century warranty.  It’s all I can ask for regarding non-user error.  After fishing that SME….it’s all I can ask for!!!
