Reel/rod match question

I have a tica 8ft M/H surf rod rated 10-25 lb

3/4-3oz.

I want to use it when only sub slot fish are around or for fishing other sub 24" species from shore.

I have an Okuhma Epixor 55b on it now. I was going to spool it with 20lb braid instead of the 15lb mono I've been using. I'm wondering if this reel is a decent match for this rod or if I should be looking for something else. I'm not looking to spend much if I need to upgrade the reel, its just a 3rd option for me. I don't even know what it's equivalent would be to a real saltwater rig. I'd be looking for something like a lower end Kastking if it's recommended that I replace the Okuma.

Thanks

I don’t think the reel is a bad match for the rod. That being said, that setup may be a bit heavy for targeting schoolies, but it will work.

the epixors are actually pretty nice for the price, I’d take an epixor over probably any of the pricier kastking reels

I know the rod is a bit heavy but its what I have. Already bought 2 new reels & a bunch of tackle for this season so I'm about tapped out. I might be able to find a cheap rod that would be able to handle 1 1/2oz Bucktails and such but it would probably be crap.

I say fish what you got, it should have no problem throwing small plastics, bucktails,

sp minnows and the like. Use what you got, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it so to say. It should work no problem

And Epixor, like @EliasA said, is a good reel.

Better than any KK reel, for sure.

20 lb should be OK, if you are not planing to throw anything heavier than 2

oz. If you are playing with lures in 2 - 3 oz range, than you may need to spool it with 30 lb braid.

Most important thing is, go out and have fun fishing.

Thanks man. I've got a 10ft tica with a bg4500 & a10'6" tfo with a Spheros 8000 for bigger stuff. I just wanted a smaller set-up for smaller fish & other species & didn't want to have to spring for another reel at this point.
