Another vote for the mono rig here. I use a cheapo LL Bean 5 wt plastic reel, and have surprisingly little issue with the mono getting out of the cage. 10'6 3 wt rod and that seems to be pretty well suited for everything I do, light enough to make the small trout fun but enough backbone that I've been able to land 4-5lb shad and trout up to 24" without much issue. A big thing here, if you don't want to spend the money on a euro specific rod right out of the gate, you can run a mono rig on your standard 4-5wt trout rod. You'll have a little less reach, but you can get a sense of whether it's something you want to dive into first.

Starting out, use a single fly until you get comfortable with the technique, it'll save you a ton of headaches. Double fly rigs will tangle really badly if you don't have the casting sorted out.

I appreciate all the comments. So like what’s the basic equipment though for euro/mono/tight line nymphing though? Like specific line+ specific test/wt/etc.

I’ve read about and heard people mention “feeling the bottom” so many times… I’ve been through miles of different kinds/tests of line and have yet to feel the bottom at all. Lol.
If i could I would like to make an as close as possible clone of a functioning setup by someone who knows what they’re doing.  That way, when things aren’t going as planned, at least i know it’s me and not that I’m using the wrong line for the 10th time. Lol.

I'll second or as i continue scrolling now third the Mono Rig. Google Trout Bitten Mono Rig. Be prepared for a rabbit hole though. Make sure you have free hours to make that dive on his website, it's great.

Yes the rabbit holes. That’s what gets me.
I’m admittedly not good at extracting the 3-4 useful tidbits of info from the days wort of reading material/ 2 hour long vids.
When i got into regular fly fishing, it took me probably 2 years to really figure things out … then i taught my nephew and had him doing it in 30 minutes. That’s because I told/taught him only the parts he needed to know. Lol.

Google Lance Eagen he has two videos one is Modern Nymphing one is Nymphing elevated get them both all the information is there are presented well. You will probably get a clearer answer that way

This is the formula i use for euro nymphing.

42" of 20lb Maxima Chameleon

42" of 15lb Maxima Chameleon

42" of 12lb Maxima Chameleon

(blood knots all above)

18" of .012 Cortland Bicolor  indicator mono (blood knot and leave short tag ends)

Tippit Ring

5-6ft of 4x to 6x fluorocarbon

Surgeon's knot with 6-8" tag

24" of tippit

and the picture is of a drop shot nymph rig

Search troutbitten mono rig, he's got the leader formula info spelled out in detail with the why behind it all in even greater detail. Biggest hurdles in the learning curve for me were recovering slack fast enough once the flies hit the water and reminding myself to keep casts at 20' or less in the beginning. It's up close and personal fishing, even now I don't go more than 30' max.

So here’s a stupid question: if you do one of there rigs do you have a full spool of mono? Mono section between beginning of leader and fly line?
I remember i was experimenting with my regular fly rod early on, made a tapered mono leader and, at the instruction of some video I watched, attached it to my regular wf floating fly line. It was a sh*t show lol.

With the mono rig I attach it to regular floating line. You’ll be using mono to cast the flies. The fly line ideally shouldn’t leave the reel as it causes sag. Don’t false cast, it should just be one motion to get flies in the water.

1amson,

While it's fun and reassuring to gather all the recommended tackle for Euronymphing, you'll crack the code a lot sooner if you work on your wading skills too.  Euro is a close quarters game.  Most action is going to occur within 20 feet. You need to practice being invisible.  Wear camo.  Spend a lot of time motionless. Study the water and plan your approach.

Watch a great blue heron fish sometime.  Do it like that and you'll soon start seeing the magic of a short, tight line.

If you can swing it, hire a guide who specializes in euro. Not sure where your located but that investment will take years off the learning curve.

Stretch it.

I do not know that line at all. I use brown Maxima 15 for the mono part of my rig.

I do 15 maxima from the line to the first tippet ring, maybe 25 feet.

Sighter leader 1x from the first tippet ring 3 feet to the next tippet ring.

Then the tippet of flouro 5x or whatever is needed. I use a triple surgeons loop that is cut to create the dropper and main stem to tie the flies to.

Yeah I stretched the crap out of it… but it was out in the cold for a while. Brought it in to warm up, then stretched the crap out of it again and it was nice and noodley… and not a fusilli noodle like in the pic before lol.   I was actually out in the yard for hours today messing with this stuff and discovered an insanely easy setup that surprisingly worked really good. Just the 20 lb laser line as the main line and attached a 9’ 2x leader tied directly with a triple surgeon. Basically made the connection right where the line and butt end of the leader were roughly the same diameter.  Practiced whipping it around for a while, then put on a tungsten jig and was able to tuck cast it all over with pretty great accuracy and distance. I’m going to call it my K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) rig.

Just make sure your leader / tippet that is in the water is not tapered.  One of the benefits of fishing the euro rig is having one diameter line in the water from top to bottom of the column.  Helps with drag and staying in contact with your flies.  I would also drop down to 12 or 14 pound amnesia mono.  Some guys are using 6 pound line.  trend has been lighter and lighter.  Also don't expect to feel bottom much without a 10 to 11ft euro rod.
