SPRO Swivel on Tactical Angler Clip

Hi all!

As I re-rig during winter I was thinking about adding a swivel to the bottom of my tactical clip. Normally I do the swivel mono and then attach the clip directly to the mono before putting the lure on. I was thinking why not add a swivel?? Has anyone done this? Are there any negative affects?

I’ve never done this, but do you think it is really necessary?  I just think it adds another piece of gear that can fail.  I’ve had swivels break on me so I’m not sure that the incremental benefit of a second swivel outweighs the added risk of breakage.

Caught plenty of fish exactly like this. Be sure to check the clip when reel up in the correct direction before sending it back down.

I started doing that this year. Caught lots of stripers like that. I'll continue to do it that way until I experience a reason not to.

Swivels are unnecessary and I think using one with a paper clip style speed connector is inviting opportunity for failure.

If you feel the need to use a swivel, I’d suggest you use it with something like a duo lock snap.

At least then, the swivel would  be “locked” on.

Those speed connectors make it too easy for something like a swivel to accidentally slip off.

I seldom use swivels, so that's my bias.

I'm not sure what the advantage would be?

I suppose it adds a little bite protection from blues and/or makes swapping out clips easier and faster if you are using cilps that are undersized and the clips are getting distorded.

The disadvantage (as mentioned above) is another failure point.

What is your reason for doing it is the logical question? What's the advantage?

If it's not providing a solution to a problem then why do it?

I'll use a snap swivel if my reel is spooled with mono or fluoro.  Most of my reels are spooled with braid so I use power swivel from braid to fluoro/mono leader, then clip at end of leader.  You don't need 2 swivels, if I'm understanding correctly.  Personally I don't trust, and suck at tying, line to line knots.

I tried this last year, I didn't like it.  The swivel was way too easy to come through the TA clip.  I either tie direct if I'm worried about presentation or I use a real swivel like a duolock from VMC or BKK.  I lost a couple lures with the TA clips so I stopped using them, didn;t seem like it was any faster than opening a actual swivel but that's me.

I did that for part of one season but stopped after losing a few nice fish and plugs when the clip turned sideways and slipped out leaving just the swivel. Been direct tying ever since. You really don't need a swivel...

I cannot see a reason to do it for virtually all lures, seems unnecessary and a waste of money. The only reason I could see using one is maybe for a spoon and even then I'd use a ball bearing swivel. So if I'm trying to reduce possible line twist there's far less resistance with a BB swivel than even a good barrel swivel such as a SPRO one.

I keep the swivel on my lures now, starting doing it a couple three years ago...it's just easier to reach into my surf bag and grab a lure and clip it on

The problem I foresee happening is the swivel can slide all over during a battle or landing of fish.  If you use a heavy leader it tends to stay in place, and most swivels don’t lend any advantage to lifting a fish up considering the mono or flouro direct tie to Clíp will allow a bit of stretch.  One very important use of swivels for me is when a fish wants to roll and flop on ya.  The swivel helps the plug from twisting itself in the bass mouth.  That meaning a swivel connected to leader then to TA clip.
You can do as you please, but I can’t see any real upgrade here.  Just more gear to snap.  Doesn’t it turn into a nightmare trying to clip a plug on with the swivel at 1:30 am? The beauty of the TA clip to thick leader is she doesn’t flop around when trying to clip a plug on.  It’s almost totally blind muscle memory at this point.
If you chose to keep the swivel and TA clip all black can avoid the blues getting interested in the shiny shiny silver clip.  Not all swivels are created equal.  Best of luck

I connect my leader to braid with a uni to uni and put a TA clip on the end before I head out. The leaders I carry with me in my waders have a TA clip on one end and a swivel on the other. I find it easier to tie the braid to the swivel in the dark in a hurry than the uni to uni. However, if I have time I will remove the swivel and tie a knot. I don’t like the swivel jamming into my tiptop. I was always told swivels don’t work under pressure. Don’t know. As a matter of fact I don’t completely trust TA clips but they work well for plugging. In a perfect world everything would be tied by me, no hardware. This is strictly for surf fishing.

If you really must run something like this…I offer a solution.  Heat wrap the head of the swivel that is connected to the clip.  Less likely to move around be connected as one piece basically.  Tinkered a bit after readying this thread and here is my solution
