Ya, so far we have significantly less snow. Still another 2.5 months to go really. Personally crossing my finger I won't have to break out my snow blower at all. We've been lucky (or unlucky).

Here is a chart I found for Boston snowfall sorted by rank with the lowest amount of snow fall each season. So far this season is #2 least.

We've had plenty of March & April blizzards & Nor'easters in MA so winter and the snow ain't over by a long shot.

We had a nice Nor'easter on April 1st 2017. That was opening day at Wachusett. We got at least 6" of snow that day.

Here are a couple of pics from that afternoon. The morning snow turned to rain so it was packed down a bit by the time I showed up to fish the afternoon, post storm.

From exit 12 to exit 66 on 287....one day with snow on the grass.  Zero hazardous conditions to speak of.

No measureable snow in Bridgewater.....

Notable.

I had a motorcycle until about 2004. I vaguely remember driving around many winter weekends with temperatures in the mid forties and clean roads. Would happen on a Saturday or Sunday most often. Only for a few hours until early afternoon, but it was enough to break the cabin fever. And having grown up on the south shore, it seemed a bit of a contrast from what I remember about winter as a kid. Which was playing on the ice in small ponds and swamps, and a snow bank many layers deep that encroached further into our driveway with each storm, not to melt until spring.

Speaking of you never know when it's gonna hit, this was 10 years ago today, in western MA. My car is on the left.

As a skier, this year has created the worst snow conditions in NE ski resorts that I can remember, at a time when most areas have been taken over by huge corporations that have jacked the prices well over $100 for a weekday pass and over $200 on weekends.

I used tom ski for years, and when my knees started telling me they were ready to quit I took up snowboarding.

I did that for a number of years and finally gave it up when the ticket prices started getting prohibitive.

I stopped when they were around $40 for weekends.

I thought about giving it another go until I checked the lift prices, and said "Hell no!"

It's just not worth it, and I had already taken up ice fishing, which cost a heck of a lot less.

Ski the East!

f***ing <lol>

I grew up in western MA. When I was a kid we used to ski Mt. Tom in Holyoke all the time. I loved night skiing up there. It closed in '98 'cuz it was no longer cold enough during winter to make enough snow. They also got too much rain and not enough real snow to supplement the man made snow.

Ironically, during the winters of '91 & '92, many areas in New England had great snow falls because of the '91 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines which put enough smoke & ash in the atmosphere to effect New England winters for 2 consecutive years. Meanwhile climate change deniers think that 200+ years of industrial pollution can't impact the environment. '91 & '92 were fantastic ski years in western MA & VT.

We may get some late winter shots for snow in March after all. Looking ahead 3-4weeks is never a lock, but some signs are coming together that the above average pattern we've had may end towards the tail of February.

The Polar Vortex is forecast to reverse its winds next week. This is called a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event. That's well supported in model runs. A SSW doesn't automatically mean more cold for us, but if it does contribute to a colder pattern..the cold usually hits us a couple/3 weeks after the event.

Further out, a Greenland Block downstream may develop.

Odds of a cold start^ and some chances for snow in early March are definitely increased if both those come to pass.

***

Hope the warm times continue though. I'm off to the Keys 3rd wk of March..and late cold fronts associated with cool times in the east can really screw up the fishing for days.
