I think Zinger just came out with a squid that I plan to try. Having a hard time finding a photo but looks like a giant version of a soft plastic tube like you would use for freshwater bass.

Must be the Italian in me, but when I think/talk about squid, it's all about catching up a bunch for dinner...

I’ve always felt weird throwing bucktails from a boat. I’ve caught fishing doing it but it’s always felt wrong, it’s sorta a superstition by this point

When casting bucktails from a boat, be sure to tie one arm behind your back, just to make it fair.  It will feel right again ;)

Also did well late this summer on Ron McKee’s squid needles and 12” sluggos in the squid color.

I didn’t realize he made squid needles, that looks killer. I’m gonna have to pick one up

When squid are abundant, I like catching the squid!

I always bring a Tenryu eging rod and a bucket of squid jigs whenever I go out in spring

is it weird that I catch and release fish for squid?

I used to always fill a bucket the first day of the season then freeze them than cut them into strips for fluke/sea bass/scup fishing for the rest of the season but lately the fluke fishing has been so abysmal I haven’t even bothered to keep any squid

that and I just wrapped a jigging rod for scup so the past season I exclusively targeted them with 4-10gram jigs and epoxy minnows

Small bucktail and a squid strip is fun as hell on porgy, small bsb, sea robins and what ever else.

Dan Tinman (down in the BST) makes em with a great hook down to 1/8oz.

My goal for this summer is harbor pollock. Didn't catch any last summer on my short trip up to Mass.

people don’t realize how aggressive porgies are. Last 2 years I’ve targeted them mid summer through early fall with a mh freshwater bait caster and 3/8 oz epoxy minnows. On lighter gear they pull hard, and you can catch them practically anywhere. I always take my siblings out and we just run 5 minutes out of the harbor and within 5 minutes we’re on constant action

I got bored and had some extra money  laying around so I just wrapped a 6’ 5 medium action BFS blank for shallow water jigging. I acid wrapped it for fun, and it’s rated like 1/32-3/8 oz. I have a baitcaster with 10lb braid on top of it, I’m planning on doing some damage on all the trash fish with it. I just picked up some 10 and 14gram jigs too, so bsb, porgy, searobins, mackerel and whatever else aren’t safe

How do u like the assist hook on the rear like that?  All my jigs came with assist on the front and treble rear. I didn't like the treble so I took it off and left it bare.   But a rear assist might work for me.

I mostly fish 8-20’ deep with pretty nasty bottom and I was hanging up on the rear assist hook a lot so I just took it off

I honestly don’t fish them like flutter jigs when I’m targeting porgy holding on the bottom. I like to maintain constant tension and just do small, fast taps with the rod so the bottom tip of the jig is quickly tapping the  bottom.

I don’t chum or anything so I usually don’t anchor, instead I drift slowly so I cover a lot of bottom and keep my jig near the bottom the whole sweep.

if I mark fish suspending I will yo-yo the jig, but I mostly dance it on the bottom, so with the tail in the bottom like that the bottom hook tends to hang up.

I'm a shore guy and that's why I took off the treble.  Just too many hang ups.

Yeah shallow water bottom fishing and trebles generally don’t play well together

even on bigger jigs I really don’t see the need in a bottom treble hook, on small baits I run a single assist hook on the head and on larger jigs I use 2 assist hooks on the head. The only time I use a treble hook is meat ground fishing for pollock and tilefish and the like
