I’m bored and I’m class so all I can think about is spring.

spring squid blitzes are by far one of my favorite times to fish. What’s everyone’s go to squid blitz lure?

it seems like around me we’ve been getting lots of small squid early, so my go to is a merthiolate painted super spook

what’s everyone else’s go to for a baby squid blitz

Bucktail with twister tail

I’ve always felt weird throwing bucktails from a boat. I’ve caught fishing doing it but it’s always felt wrong, it’s sorta a superstition by this point

Granted I catch on everything when squid is around. If it’s hot, it’s hot but that bucktail flutter is very convincing like a squid flutter. Depends on the spot of course. Each of my spots have their favorite baits for some reason

I feel like lots of spots are like that, where one bait seems to produce time and again.

And when they're really crushing squid they'll hit anything, but I've always found slow fluttering and darting lures like spooks and bigger plastics tend to weed out blues for the most part.

Must be the Italian in me, but when I think/talk about squid, it's all about catching up a bunch for dinner...

I like using a whole squid for bait for fluke- only a giant fluke can inhale the entire bait so it weeds out the shorts

Same.  If I'm surrounded by squid, screw the fish!  I'm filling my cooler.

After dark, it’s hard to beat a SS darter in trans Amber when the squid are running.

The amber was outfishing the regular standard Montauk colors 10 to 1 during a month-long squid bite long ago. Nobody else had them. Eventually Donny changed from clear pellets to white pellets and translucent colors were no longer possible. That's how the "sh-t" brown color (painted over white) came to be. The translucent was by far the better producer for me of the two

Whole squid lobbed from a sand beach have caught many cow bass over the years. I like to throw squid flies, with a 10wt or on a dropper loop in front of whatever plug or tin needed to deliver it where I want it.

Funny you say that because I had that experience last year
