NEW: the casting competition will be divided into the traditional “Athlete” level (standard CSCA/international rules) and a new separately-recognized and awarded “Angler” level of competition for surf fishermen seeking to casually compete and learn without the pressure of stringent international rules, or going up against exotic tackle and techniques.

See complete Athlete and Angler division rules at https://carolinasurfcasters.webs.com/tournament-info

Was excited to see new ‘anglers’ class…….till i seen no braid allowed.

thought maybe by now the powers to be would get with the times and at least allow the spinning reel guys to use braid. Not many surf anglers are still using mono……

Fishbucket: yeah, it’s a tricky situation where perception is reality: “braid cuts mono”. Someone shooting for international recognition in the Athlete division probably doesn’t want braid anywhere near their thin mono.

We may allow braid in the future… if we find the time to prove or disprove the adage conclusively for ourselves. Right now Ryan and I are just trying to get our bearings (no pun intended). Please have patience and support the club if you can.

Oh i will still support the club…….great bunch of guys.

here is a suggestion ……..a separate class for braid spinners……no weight classes, just throw what you feel comfortable with on surf gear you fish with. There would probably not be many casters to start out and it shouldn’t add much time to overall event.

Throwing braid , throwing mono … obviously throwing braid may go further from either a spinner or conventional … so what’s the point … to be able to say I threw x amount of yards with braid … more complications … I agree with Matt t only mono …

We’re trying to determine if people want to cast braid in a tournament because it goes a little farther, or is it just a pain to find high-viz. mono and re-spool the reel. Any input?

I don’t use anything but hi vis mono … the birds don’t get tangled when I’m fishing the beech due to the fact they can see it .. cabellas, dicks , Davis … on line … if your going to enter a casting completion you may need two spools or close to six hundred yards for each event you enter .. if you snap off do you want to refill your spool or replace with a second spool … there are minimal thickness for each weight or cast all your events with the thickest line …plus a top shot … sooo If you want to cast it sounds like you need to buy mono which is easy to obtain … it’s just a matter of having the correct thickness and the proper amount to compete … as far as cost mono is not expensive … we can whine about braid but it’s mono … sooo bring your best tackle and go for it … ALERT …if you can’t cast competively using mono you can’t cast competively using braid …

Not saying to replace mono with braid in regular competition…….just saying maybe a separate class for braid…….

Maybe distance casting could keep up with the times…long cast spinners with braid have improved to the point where they are competitive with conventionals so why not include them in competitions?

Give them their own class and see how they stack up……might increase participation

It is an interesting idea with, I think, much merit.

Inasmuch a "run-what-ya-brung" class migh garner interest, there WILL be a point where competitors start defining their  achievements according to line and sinker used: "ya but he was using thinner liner and a lighter sinker", so my cast is more of an achievement..."

Maybe use similar classes with braided main lines that are simialr in dia, with suitable braid leaders?

Here is a possible scenario:

Basically:

100g 10lb braid with 65lb braid leader

125g 15lb braid with 65lb braid leader

150g 20lb braid with 80lb braid leader

175g 30lb braid with 80lb braid leader

Or

15lb braid with 80lb braid leader across the 4 classes?

Or let interested parties throw 10lb mono with a 65lb braid leader with 125g / 4oz or 150g / 5oz sinkers.

Cheap if you break off and casts VERY well.

Best to provide competitors with hand out sinkers so all throw the same weight....
