New update on Striped Bass stock assessments shows some very interesting data, that being that total number of fish removed by commercial, both harvest and discard in both 2020 & 2021, is about 1/10 that of the recreational removals.

OK, pull out your soapboxes and decry commercial fishing while you deny any responsibility by recreational fishing.  This should be some fine comic relief.

So what percentage of fishermen are recreation and what percentage are commercial?   And maybe you can show us some posts where people said recreational fishing had no blame.

Not sure the table means a lot if we don't have details of where each data point was constructed.

1. There are few commercial fishermen compared to recreational.

2. Each Striper caught by a recreational fisherman puts a lot more money into the economy.

3. We need to do a better job of managing a fishery that has this many participants and is as economically important.

4. Recreational fishermen have to understand the consequences of releasing 20, 30, or more fish. That substantial mortality is involved In catch and release.

But I agree that the Recreation folks are a big part of the problem and would advocate for a closure of the Striped Bass Fishery.. (no posesion)(no sales of wild caught Striped Bass) completely. A full moratorium until the stock is rebuilt.

This data is bull**** no rec fisherman i know ever gave a catch report so were is the data from ?

I've been interviewed a few times over the years. Always some find of college program worked in conjunction with NYS and the interviewers were usually set up (blocking) the point of entry/exit. So yes there were "catch reports" but in reality few and far between and were the interviewers told the truth in the first place? Never by anyone I ever knew.

A few times at boat launches  and at a few state parks we were interviewed . Always some college student always in the middle of the day and we always lied about types and size of fish caught.

The  mortality rate on caught stripers is nothing new. Massachusetts marine fisheries did a hook mortality study on stripers  in 1989 . they came up with 8 or 9 % . Daignault did an article on it in the fisherman magazine in july of 1990
