Joed5
Thinking of getting a longer handle trout net, FishPond Nomad emerger or Nomad Mid Length. Curious about what net you use and how you carry it. I use a sling pack and have my net on a retractable lanyard. Thanks.
flyman28
Tina Lewis. She will build a custom net to whatever size you want. She's at Wayward Trading Post. Cool Lady! MikeK and TomG
MikeK
I have both the fishpond nomad emerged and the native. I like to have the head of the net attached to a magnet off a d ring on my back. So I can easily grab the net handle and net the fish in one motion. I found the handle on the emerger to be too long either suspended on through the sleeve on a sling back. I fish the native religiously, which is still bigger/longer than the standard net. My next net will be ffrom Tina Lewis. Her stuff is awesome. puppet
I find traditional nets to be overkill and heavy. Some guys carry ridiculouly large nets. For a few years i used the paknet which is a tradtionally sized folding trout nene * Since then, i have moved onto tenkara style nets. they are long handled and are extremely light. That net above my daughter is using is a 24 cm diameter mankyu tamo net. My favorite net. Really nice nets. I dont own one but sam lacina makes a beautiful long handle tenkara inspired net. Stonefish
I use a wood net made by Brady’s Homemade Nets. He offers a number of styles and sizes. My main criteria for any net is that the bag is deep enough that when you net a decent size fish, they don’t easy flop out like they are on a trampoline. Not a fan of nets with shallow bags, like 9” deep. SF

To specifically reply to your question, it would depend on what kind of waters you fish. I stubbornly refused to consider the Nomad Mid Length as overkill, even as I watched my brother quickly net fish with his. Both my brothers have vacation homes on rivers in Montana, so we we spend long days fishing. Both have rafts that we use to float from run to run in difficult/impossible areas to walk to. We get out so the rower can fish too. The Mid length is a great help fishing steep banks where you are pinned to the bank with deep/fast water just a step away. Leading a heavy fish back to a small net with a 10’ 9” tippy nymph rod is way harder than with a 9’ fast action rod. With a regular net, if the tippy nymph rod starts tipping over to the faster water as the fish veers away from you, you will end up having to fight the fish all over again. But with the longer handle of the Mid length, the fish is netted way more easily. Once I realized it was better for the fish to be landed quickly, I couldn’t justify persisting without getting my own Mid length Nomad. I have the Fishpond wading belt with the built in net holder. I’m still experimenting with attachable retracting devices. My brother has given up on a retractor, and just advises not letting go of the net until it goes back in the net holder. Of course a longer handle is essential for netting fish caught from the raft while floating to the next run.
frobombs
I also just picked up the nomad mid length. Ive been using a cheap $20 cortland net I got at the fly fishing show years ago, but now that I mostly fish with trout speys or euro nymph rods the extra length handle makes netting much easier. I too keep it on my belt, I tried to get the fishpond holder but no one had one in stock so I grabbed the umpqua version. I just attach a lanyard to it in case I drop it so it doesnt float away.
