I have a Shimano 4000fb in nearly great condition with box & papers. Saw saltwater maybe 10 times used it for lake fishing mostly but barely used there too. A year later it was replaced with a van staal100.

Out of these two I'd vote for the Vanford too, it just feels better in hand than the ballistic to me but everyone is different

Anything Penn.. And after every use just wash the outfit down.. I own Penns that are seventy years old and function just as the day I took them out of the box..

Yeah, well, most of what Penn is having made for them now in Asia aren't built like that.

True but same with all other reel makers unless you want to spend 400-1000 for USA or Japan made.  Current penns are competitive at their price point.

I uses a Shimano Stradic 4000.  Smooth as silk and lots of balls for a small reel.

1000% the Vanford. Any Shimano with X Protect. This is coming from a huge Daiwa fan.

going with the Vanford 3k, have you tried sunline Defier braid? i also wanna get a jerkbait or 2 any suggestions and what size hooks you replace them with?

I haven’t tried the defier braid, but I have tried the siglon x8 in 15lb test and had one good spool and one bad spool that broke at like 4lbs, so that kinda turned me off sunline braid.

the best jerkbaits are hands down the megabass, what model bait and size hook depends on which model you get and what environment you fish in (fresh or salt)

No, YGK Upgrade x8 in PE1 (22lb) to 10-12lb sniper - many JBs but from the surf Pointer 78DD is a good start - Gammy SP MH Hypershield #7 belly, Owner Single #2 tail, #2 Decoy Light Class split rings. That's how I set mine up for summertime beaches. You have to tune them to slow float, about 3-4" per second to work it upslope. I'll have a full video out at some point but that should get you started.

Not sure why more guys aren't using baitcasters in the surf -thats all I use. Get a decent setup that can double as a largemouth outfit, you can cast all day they are so light plus you can give them a quick rinse and lube when your done and they will last forever. Its a pleasure fishing a baitcaster/convench that i won't even touch a ladies reel(spinner) feels awkward.
