Hello Everyone,

Newer plug builder here. I was wondering if anyone was willing to share their preferred paint to paint lures with an airbrush? I was looking at all the paints in Michaels and wasn't sure if any of those were good for plug making. Im new to the forums and haven't figured out how to search specific forums yet. If anyone could also let me know how to do that I would greatly appreciate that as well. Excited to be starting this craft!

Yea , createx. I prefer paying the dollar or two more for the wicked colors .. they usually alil more consistent on how they thinned but still need more thinning sometimes ..

hobby lobby is the only place I find it locally without having to order online

Deep knowledge on here about the full process and different approaches. Still pretty new to plug making myself but the method I've found on here that I like is sand > seal with envirotex (thinned with denatured alcohol or not) > scuff > prime > scuff > paint > rustoleum clear matte 2X > envirotex seal (2 thin coats)

I use createx, golden, and even regular acrylic craft paint thinned down with acrylic airbrush medium… because i don’t give a f. In some cases i think the reduced craft paint does what i want it to do better than the expensive stuff that’s actually made for the airbrush lol.
One thing to be aware of with the createx “wicked colors” is they are not solid, but rather a high pigment transparent.  What that means in short (based on my own experience) is there’s a hell of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of them, they’re very versatile.
Im a painter by trade and have been air brushing for a while now, and it still drives me crazy sometimes. I love all the phases of building a plug, but to be honest with you, my favorite part of the painting process is when it’s over :p.

Right , it’s a love hate relationship for sure here .. sometimes the paints spraying so nice . Other days clog after clog .. can be frustrating..

beat advice I’d give someone is learn how to clean an airbrush thoroughly. Like every piece shine ..

Wow! Thank you all for the responses. I will have to hit Hobby Lobby on monday to grab a few colors and start playing around with them. Doing some turning in a few and hopefully will have a few blanks epoxied by the end of the night!

I saw online they sell stuff to spray through the airbrush to clean it. Anyone have experience with those? All the stuff I read involved taking them apart, seems like the best practice imo to make sure they are properly cleaned.

Ah ha! Thank you. I’ve really struggled with coverage with yellow and green so glad to hear they actually aren’t solid and it’s not just me. I now add some white to each color and that helps with better cover but also makes a lighter color. I’m gonna give the Aztek paints a try

Yeah. I used mostly golden before (and the craft paint). Got a big expense set of the wicked colors because everyone raves about them.  Right out of the bottle they’re so thick that they barely come out of the airbrush.  Thin them down, now they come out fine, BUT… remember… it’s a transparent, not a solid.  So basically, they’re great for shading. However, If you need to do a certain color base coat or just want to do a simple pass of blue to cover the back of a plug, don’t even bother.
