Former Neptune police chief sues township for discrimination

And collects $500,000.  Imagine if discrimination against white folks suddenly becomes a legal problem?

(*From Asbury Park Press)

NEPTUNE - Township Committee voted Monday night to approve a $500,000 settlement agreement with former Police Chief James M. Hunt Jr., bringing an end to Hunt's 2020 racial discrimination lawsuit.

Hunt, who became chief in 2014 and retired in May 2022, filed the lawsuit in November 2020 claiming that he had been harassed by the township and had his authority usurped by the township's Police Oversight Committee that he said sought to replace him with a person who is not white.

The $500,000 settlement includes legal fees and will be paid by the township’s insurance carrier, according to Monday night's resolution.

In the lawsuit, Hunt alleged he was the victim of discrimination when the Police Oversight Committee was looking into allegations of systemic discrimination, harassment and wrongdoing by the Neptune Police Department.

Hunt filed his lawsuit a few weeks after Barry Colicelli, a police consultant hired by Neptune filed his own lawsuit, which alleged that township officials and an attorney hired to investigate him conspired with one another to terminate his contract as consultant to the township’s oversight committee. Colicelli alleged they engaged in that conspiracy “rather than take action to eliminate the rampant discrimination and retaliation in the Neptune Police Department."

Hunt’s lawsuit only named Neptune Township as a defendant, but it focused on Colicelli, alleging that Colicelli and the oversight committee interfered with Hunt’s authority to run the department.

Colicelli's lawsuit is still pending in Monmouth County Superior Court.

According to Hunt's lawsuit, a November 2013 email sent by Committeeman Michael Brantley, former chairman of the Police Oversight Committee, supported his claim of racial discrimination.

The email read, in part, “Moving forward I expect that only Black candidates will be considered for the positions of Neptune Chief of Police and Superintendent of Schools."

Hunt, however, was named police chief after that email was sent and Brantley voted in favor of Hunt's appointment.

Brantley was absent from Monday's Township Committee meeting and did not vote on the $500,000 settlement resolution.

A report written in April 2022 by Ellen O’Connell, the attorney hired by the township to investigate Hunt’s claims of a hostile work environment, concluded, “there is a motivation to remove Chief Hunt because of his race." O'Connell was paid $19,965 by the township for her report.

Last year, Hunt received a payout of $110,467 from the township following his retirement.

Neptune has paid millions in legal settlements in the last decade.

From 2013-2020, more than $2 million was spent defending and settling lawsuits brought against the township and its Police Department, alleging retaliation, sexual harassment and discrimination. In that time the township paid $900,000 to settle two lawsuits brought by two female police officers. More than $1.2 million was paid in attorney fees defending those lawsuits.

People shouldn't be hired or fired or promoted or dismissed based on their skin color...no matter what color that might be. Even though we have laws that force companies to discriminate by skin color. It's so confusing.

It's a shame it's come to this, but some folks embrace discrimination while accusing others of doing so.

These folks need criminal charges to hold them accountable, not simply taking OUR money to make settlements!

Yep

The Justice Department and eight states sued Google on Tuesday, accusing the company of harming competition with its dominance in the online advertising market and calling for it to be broken up.

The move marks the Biden administration's first blockbuster antitrust case against a Big Tech company. The eight states joining the suit include California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Virginia.
