Old wood plug

This one’s got me stumped - anyone know what it is? Measures about 5 or 6 inches long. Thanks!

No - bought it years ago from an old timer who couldn’t fish anymore. Part of a bunch of plugs that included some old dannys & a conrad. Any ideas?

I don't remember seeing a darter with a cupped face like that.  Someone took great care to create that beauty.  Maybe an old Jack Freck darter.  Frankie McCann used to make all of his own plugs. Maybe it was one of his.  Those guys caught a lot of fish. If it was one of theirs it was tested and swam right.  Thrown it a lot.  Hope you catch a fifty with it.

It looks like a longer home made copy of an fresh water plug called a Bass Orena{SP). Nice

Hmm - good call on the bass oreno. It’s very similar.

There were a lot of different sizes of Oreno style plugs made by quite a few manufacturers, larger versions too like the Musk-Oreno, Tarp-Oreno etc.

The hardware on yours says it's not one of the major brands of the day though; through wire and swivel were not used by any of those companies (some used through wire but the hook hangar was a flat strap not a swivel, like CCBCO) so this suggests a garage/basement builder...
