stripedbassking
I may be finding myself down in the Outer Banks in April, Most likely be in the Kitty Hawk area. Just curious what species are active during that time of year. Did some research online, but curious what anglers see now a days on that coastline for species that time of year. Thanks in advance! hhager23
This probably won't be much help but I've had mixed results in April. When I was a kid April was shark month on a lot of the piers but that was a long time ago. Results in recent years have varied from getting skunked to a fair bite on the soundside. I think it totally depends on the weather trends and water temps when you are there. I know thats a given anyway and like I said not much help. I normally fish the more southern beaches but cephalopholis who knows the northern beaches much better than I can probably give you better advice. @Cephalopholis Cephalopholis and stripedbassking 2 "A land without memories is a people without liberty" - Robert E. dcast
More southern beaches in the Spring, definitely. Ocracoke your best bet. stripedbassking, Terry Mac, hhager23 and 1 other

savfish
Ocean water temps can be 10 degrees warmer from Buxton south that time of year. Buxton will be a 1hr 15 min drive from Kitty Hawk. Hope for s or sw winds and 60 degree + water temps. That will be your best chance for a big red drum. Cephalopholis
Forget the northern beaches this April (unless you want a lot of skunk)...head south! The water has been unusually cold around here (kitty hawk, southern shores) this winter. Right now it's only 45 degrees (but still 60 in Hatteras area)! All the northern beaches just got nourished, so there will be no life in the sand- which is still readjusting. If you do fish here, red fish most likely will not be on the menu...more like tiny spot and mullet. The drive south isn't that bad and well worth it! hhager23, sbcbmx112, Fishhead7 and 1 other 4 If you can't dazzle them with brilliance.....Baffle 'em with bull sheet

towpro
I have been to Rodanth in April, I recall seeing blues hitting the beach but it was definitely not beach weather as the winds were sand blasting everything. stripedbassking 1 Lakes of Central FL
stripedbassking
Any suggestions for springtime baits to use? Curious is reds will hit plugs like striped bass, or if they tend to hit smaller lures? GOD made my Mold different from the rest, Then he broke that mold so I know I'm Blessed. towpro
I am no way the expert, but I always fished with bait, but kept a spinning rod close by with a shinny 3' silver underwater plug in case the Spanish show up or even to throw at blues when they go into a frenzy. johnbull
Speaking for Hatteras Island, not for the northern beaches, April can be pretty good for drum. This will be casting bait. (the stereotypical "8 and bait") There might be some blues, and there are always some sharks around to mess up your gear. hhager23
One of the best days we ever had was offshore in late April out of Hatteras Harbor. We ended up with over 500# of cleaned tuna and wahoo including this 102# my wife caught.
