Roof Rack Question

8 posts in this topic

Hey guys, my  Outback has a different factory rack than my Forrester had. I used to just put my long Yakima bars and clamp right on the old rack. Perfect for the canoe/ kayak. New one sucks.

Has anyone seen clips that go on the factory cross pcs that accept a set of bars? I'm NOT spending $500 on a new set up from Yakima. They can pound sand lol

Thanks

Bill

The only real option I found for an Outback (car, not yak) is the Yakima. I managed to get a used set of Yakima towers that fit on the factory rail (replaces the bars) and then found a set of rails for under $200 all said and done ... Facebook Market Place

I had a similar issue with my Jeep for regular ski racks. Found a different type of connector online that fit a flatter crossrack style.

I bought a ski rack with  that fits my cross rack. Had to get longer bolts but it fits. Perfect rod rack.

What year is the Outback?  I have a 2020 and love the factory rack.  I have pads for crossbars and my kayak goes right on the factory crossbars.

My canoe is too wide for the factory rack. I have yakima bars and towers that clamped on the old rack on the forester or my wifes Endeavor. They don;t work on the outback. The wilderness edition has the right rack.

If you already have Yakima crossbars, all you need is the correct towers, landing pads and bar adapters.

Still not cheap, but it should be about $350. I spoke to Yakima last week about something else and they mentioned that REI might be including Yakima in their anniversary sale this spring. You'd have to be a member, but it's usually 20% off, and runs for a week or so mid-late March.
