Megabass Vision 110 Suspending

61 posts in this topic

Got my first megabass jerkbait (Vision 110 1/2 oz Suspending) and all I hear everyone praise these baits for is their deadly jerking and suspending action that is great for lethargic coldwater bass. Went out to try and and it certainly casts phenomenal but as soon as I start the retrieve and stop it the nose or the tail points straight down and it sinks like a rock in the least life like fashion imaginable. Seems like the sliding weights inside go to the front or back and just weigh the bait down way too much to suspend. Is there something maybe I am doing wrong or something with the bait? I am using this bait in very cold water (upper 30's) which I know plays a big part in sink rates I see it all the time fishing hudds in March vs September but I didn't think it would have this drastic of an effect on the megabass jerkbait to the point that it sinks like a rock. Comes stock with 3 trebles which I plan on replacing, maybe only put on 2 hooks to help with weight distribution in cold water?

where did you buy it?  If you got one off the auction site, it may be a knock off.  Megabass lives on quality control

Post a photo of the bait in question and we can tell you if it's a knockoff. The other possibility is the bait cracked and filled with water. I've had this happen and can never find the damage but hold it up to the light and there's water inside the bait.

A normal 110 will suspend perfectly on 8lb fluoro in 40F - if you go 10lb it might give it a very (extremely) slow sink bc the fluoro starts pulling the bait down on long pauses.

fil 5 galon bucket cold water from tap, push the lure to mitel,it should suspend,if it does not send that back it is defective, if it sink slow in cold water ,you have to adjust the weight, defrent hooks, defrent o rings.

you should make that perfect in bucket at home.

if it is sinking in lake, make that in bucket slow rising.

when you come yo lake cast one or 2 times and then check for suspending ,carie with you defrent size dual snap and ad for proper suspending.

or you can have plaiers and ad defrent size o rings.

the dual snap and o rings act like ratel in the lure.

What lb test line are you using? The lures are designed to be used with 6-8lb fluoro, fishing heavier line like 10, 12, or 16lb test can cause them to sink

its also possibly a fake, it could just be a qc lemon, or maybe it’s cracked and taking on water.

megabass has the best qc of any mass production lure making company I’ve ever seen, but it is possibly a lemon with a faulty molding or incorrectly set weights that don’t allow it to balance itsself

There's more to it than that - your altitude and most importantly line size. End of a cast, long pauses, straight fluoro will sink and eventually pull your bait down. Line size matters.

Megabass are by far the most consistent JB I've tried. Lucky Craft has been one of the worst, and almost every pointer required a bit of tinkering to suspend correctly.

I like fishing them on #12 fluoro. #10 is as light as a lot of people go.

They were "designed" to fish on 6-8lb (just look at the stock outbarb hooks they are super thin), but that doesn't mean you can't fish them on heavier line. 10 and 12lb will sink the bait, but very slowly and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

What the OP is describing - sinking like a rock tail first etc - is either a defect/cracked body or a counterfeit.

Cut and paste from the megabass usa website:

THE VISION ONETEN IS AT ITS BEST WHEN FISHED WITH 6LB. TO 15LB. FLUORO, WITH A SWEET SPOT IN THE 10-12LB RANGE. LINE DIAMETER WILL AFFECT THE DEPTH THE ONETEN IS ABLE TO REACH, RUNNING NEARLY 7 FT. DEEP ON 6LB. TEST, TO AROUND 4 FT. ON 15LB. TEST.

How can I sleep tonight knowing you disagree? :)

He replied to a question with a valid explanation based upon real world experience from actually using the lure. He knows which line it works best with for him. You can disagree all you want.

What did you think I responded with? A copy and paste from the Megabass website? (Not that that information isn’t helpful, it is) Of course I can disagree all I want. That’s always been an American right.

That's what people here fish them on, and that's what Megabass went with bc no one was ready to throw a $25 1/2oz jerkbait on 6lb fluoro - but that's separate from what the designers had in mind when they built the bait. You can hear it (ad nauseum) from Randy Blauket, who is sort of a clown but he did have a major hand in designing the bait, and I recall a couple of articles from Yuki Ito saying the same thing. It was meant as a clear water full bodied finesse JB that you fish on light line for "optimal" results. But I fish it on heavier line all the time depending on what/when/where. I've changed hooks to large singles and fished it around laydowns on 16lb sniper in the summer. It didn't matter bc I'm not pausing the bait at all.

Thing is winter jerkbait fishing...on a 4 minute cast with 10-20 second pauses between twitches, your fluorocarbon line will sink below the bait, and it will pull it down. The heavier the line, the faster this will occur. Thinner dia fluoro will initially pull the bait deeper on the retrieve bc there is less drag, but then on the pause it won't sink as quickly and therefore your bait will suspend better, and look livelier even with the smallest rod tip action.
