I’ll bet you’re right! There’s not much you can’t fix on old Penns except backing over them with your truck.

Yep, as long as you can get the parts.

It sounds like you guys fish some pretty shitty party boats if everyone is either a drunk or a hack.

I put 65lb on the senator 1/0, which is suposed to be thicker than the gap), just in case my 16yo. daughter used it (she'd only reeled a spinning reel a couple of times before), but i just let her reel fish in without overinstructing her about laying line with her thumb.  But this is what it looks like after the last reel up.

But I taught her to use her thumb to control the reel so it doesn't backlash (happened 2x).  and now that she's kind of comfortable with it, I'll teach her to use her thumb for line lay next time out.  Already looking for another trip!  i think we'll do striper/halibut in the bay now that rockfish season is closed.

The 1/0 Senator is a great reel for tons of stuff.

Most of the dudes that roll out that chatter don't actually fish party boats.

First party boat trip I ever took was a bluefish trip on the old Gambler.

It was also the only time that I ever puked while on a boat.  Big seas, dark, A&W hot dog & clam chowder proved to be a bad combo for a newbie.  I'm surprised that I ever went again... but those gorilla blues hooked me and it all proceeded from there.

Agree. That hasn’t been my experience.

THAT can be a nightmare. I've done it more than once. The final time was when the drunks started pulling knives on each other.  My brother & I took the AM fluke trip & decided to stay for the evening blues.

Best Sheepshead Bay Bluefish trip was on the Betty W III (The one that was Golden Sunshine for awhile). Oct giant blues on jigs. Al Coley was a trip!
