So I kind of expected it to drop at the Yokohama show.  The new smaller Saltiga 4000-6000 size.

From what I see and hear from friends at the show.

Same MQ 2020 body type design.

Same G1 alloy gearing. But not as heavy duty as the big saltigas.

Spool slits accents originating from the 2015 Saltiga as a nostalgia thing.

Using the newer rotor type design from the Exist.

The rotors and bail arms seem different between models.

the spools are NOT interchangeable. meaning if you want capacity, youll need to buy more than one model. dealbreaker for me.

all 3 has different handle arms and knob sizes.

Honestly, I myself, don't seem to be digging the livery too much. Compared to the non ported, 2020 Saltigas classy attire.

The reel uses the exists airdrive so its going to be smooth. BUT... i dont dig porting.  Porting is a double edge sword.

Yes, it allows water to escape if it gets inside places, but it allow also dirt and crap to get in there too.

I don't see a reason why they added slots to the spool skirt and knob.

Made it look cheap. Should have kept all the metal solid and non ported.

I'm also not too impressed by this. As the Certate SW 4000-6000 has already been in use at a heck of a lower price point. I'd rather bash up a certate if I'm plugging in the sand and hopping on rocks all day.

Also doesn't seem to have a lower gear ratio for jigging. Thats going to be problematic for some.

Even worse, the US is only getting the XH model. LOL

I'm actually more interested in the new IM Z Limitbreaker reels.

Regardless. I'll probably be getting a few Saltiga 4 5 6k for others. My buddy asked me how many pre-orders I need. LOL

Will I use it myself?... Maybe. We shall see.

I see they fixed the base of the handle knob....that hex contouring ripped up peoples hands really bad....

First blisters, then bloody blisters...not just one guy...but a bunch.

I was at a show and blindly asked a guy...how do you like your saltiga.....the look on his face was like...how did you know I had a saltiga....my response....your hands were a dead giveaway.

Now it's smootha and rounded.

ya, that stupid hex nut was weird, but aftermarket type l knobs always fixed that problem.

the rubber tbar was a great alternative if the reel was used to jig it. like the one from your blue saltiga 15h

im more interested for the newer Airity model for a cheaper exist alternative.

and at a lower price point, the tatula.  all which has the airdrive from the exist.

those reels will be more than enough to plug or jig bass with. lol

I'll live and die with my rubber egg handles.

V sad to see daiwa copy shimano's stupid stella handle knob.

Who wants to clean fish gunk out of the teeny cnc cuts on your already small handle knob?!

I wonder if this kind puts the Bay Jigger 3500/4000 to bed

nope.  the BJ type models will always be just as good.

im not one to nitpick "smoothness" cause they all crank over really smooth to begin with.

after 20 odd years. i still have confidence in the bronze gears inside them.

so i still use my older saltigas to this day.

the G1 gears still have not had enough time to dethrone the bronze gears yet.

yup. if your gonna make slits or port the knob. make it big enough you can at least get a qtip inside to clean it out.

its a new knob design, so i dont know if it has screws holding the cap down, or if its a screw on type. it might be slightly easier.

Yeah but who wants to do that?
Make me clean important stuff, not waste time de-gunking the vanity bits

It's like 750-850 a pop right now.

But like always be mindful of jdms lack of service here from daiwa USA if you expect coverage.

Just going to warn yall here now. XH gearing needs extra attention. You must be mindful of cranking or you will damage gears.

I have had a chance to use some of the newer Saltigas but still prefer my museum piece - a Generation One 6500. Got hold of a Gen 1 Z4000 for a very reasonable price a little while ago (spotless except for the usual finish bubbles) - it will be used for light beach work (as opposed to Ditch work) and it is as clean and smooth as can be. I have landed some big fish on the 6500 and it has never failed me. Easy to strip and clean/lube. The later "upgrades" I am sure are fine but the originals are still very capable trucks.

Regards

Puck
