Going to make some FLAPTAILS Maybe Lido Style? Eastern White Pine. Have brass as well as 2 thicknesses of stainless steel for the tails. 0 Go to top
· #5 Posted January 18 I always liked thinner lighter tails as they didn't take a lot to get them moving...but then again some were made of all lead to help them get better distance. 2 Go to top

I would think no tail weight needed with the lead flaptails? The thick brass ones I have are fairly heavy. 0 Go to top
· #7 Posted January 19 yes the idea eas to make the tails out of heavier metal to take the place of a tail lead....but i like white while some like black...it's up to the builder an where they like to fish..if you like shallow flats and don't need to cast far..lighter is better but if your fishing a beach an need to get to that hole thats way out there then a heavy tail is your ticket... . one size doesn't fit all. 0 Go to top

I never saw lead used but think I had a Bernie Myers flaptail with a "sculptured fishscale" block tin flap 0 Go to top
· #9 Posted January 19 i have a fewreal bernie's and I(i can bend the tails with my thumbs..tin is much harder...years back I had a friend make a alum. mold to match those tails..tails came out great,I used a large nail set to make the scales in the flaptail...you couldn't tell mine from a real burnie's. 1 Go to top
· #10 Posted January 19 I'm working on a replica of a replica. The plug on the left belongs to an older gentleman whose father made probably 50 - 60 years ago. The plug on the right is a replica @Jigman made. My take is in primer now. I'll post a pic when I'm done. 6 Go to top
· #11 Posted January 19 It's nice to be working on something primitive for a change. Jigman really captured the spirit with this paint job. 5 Go to top
