Favorite casting setup for spinning rod? Egg? bulb?

I am a cheap rascal and I like my spinning rods. I have a few casting bulbs (plastic) and a few popping corks (from down south) and I am looking at Al Gag's Casting Egg from Tomo's tackle. I was wondering, what is your favorite setup for a teaser (splash and feather) type rig? Anyone use a casting egg? Plug? plastic casting bulbs?

Here are some flies I have recently made to try (attached)

Thanks for the input and Merry Christmas!

Good color choice, I would add a few strands of flash. And a few chartreuse and white for stained water.  Al Gag's egg works fine, I learned that trick 30 years ago in RI, just before I put my surf rod down for good.  I gave a bunch of flies to a friend on the Cape that's put them to excellent use with his spin rigs. Don't exceed 4' with the leader.

I agree with bloosfisher.   I always add flash to my bucktail jigs.  Chartreuse over white is an effective color.  Switch the position of the colors.  You have the weight on the bottom of the hook, so it's going to ride hook point up.  You want the darker color on the bottom of the hook.

Wooden egg from a craft store with stainless screw eyes from Home Depot. There is a small egg size that I like of the three sizes they sell at most craft stores, it is the best.

No input on eggs since I don't use them. Question on your flies though. Do you tie the dumbell eyes on last? Normally when tying clouser minnows you tie them on first and back a little from the hook eye. Then the material is wrapped over the center.

Thanks for help! I have no idea what I am doing….and yes, was tying the eyes on last, good to know that I should do first and tie back a little! Good info!!!! I am total novice.

Never really bothered with casting eggs.

Usually flies as teasers tied as a dropper before a plug or jig.  Sometimes I’ll pull a rear hook off on a swimming plug and tie a leader trailing a fly from that.  The shorter the leader the more the fly will swim with the plug, just like using a dodger.

From my experience I usually get more fish on the plug than the flies, so my “casting weight” usually has hooks on it.  I’ve tied some elaborate teaser rigs while experimenting with 4 or more flies only to have the rapala weight  on the end catch most of the fish.

Somebody's gotta say it. That isn't fly fishing its conventional fishing using a fly. Fine if that is what you want to do but beware where you are fishing. Many states that have "fly fishing" only sections specifically define that fly fishing means fly rod and fly line is the motive force to cast the fly.

Now that said, those are some good looking bugs!

you can buy shooting head 300 grain to 700 grain what your spining rod can handle, tie shooting head to your line on spining reel and you can cast beter and easier then fly rod to present your flys.

or you can have fly reel with 30# mono or 60# braid and shooting head.you will just swich reel and use that as fly rod,it work with all spining rods, you have to put proper weight shooting head to load the rod and it will cast very well,i did that many times.

Roger that! totally not fly fishing. I don't have the equiptment, talent etc. That is a real art. I am just farting around in a kayak and from shore. I am enjoying learning how to tie and make stuff. I'm pretty terrible at it but it is very fun.

Tom: Don't sell yourself short: it doesn't take a lot of talent to learn to flyfish adequately enough to enjoy it (you don't need to cast the whole fly line to catch a fish). Sure you need the correct equipment but you don't have to spend a fortune for that. Then a few lessons from a competent instructor (who might be a friend and not necessarily a pro) and the rest is determination and practice And you'll enjoy it in no time and have loads of fun.

i have 5 good quality fly rods.

i prefer fly fishing with spining or casting rod with shooting head.for one reason ,do not have to work hard and cast beter then fly rod.

all fly rods have problem with size eylets ,they are to small and freeze and second problem is the shooting head can not pas true..

it is to me work les with beter results.

with fly rod you have to swing back and fort 4 to 10 times,i do the cast with one swing forvard one back and one on target.

.you can not deliver with fly rod 40' with 3 swing's.

i am teling you from my experience not from teory.

i am not fly purist i am fisherman,i use what is beter results and easier.

i know you fly fish all your life,if you try what i am teling you, then you will see the defrent.

do what you like i am fine with that.

Do you use flies and if so why? There are as good if not better baits to throw with conventional gear than flies if what you want most is results.

If you can't get a shooting head to pass through your guides then perhaps a lesson in proper rigging is in order?

If you can't deliver the fly 40ft within 3 casts using a fly rod then perhaps a lesson is in order?
