tobiasfrost
This reminded me of something I stumbled over when I was shopping for stuff online just recently. Anyone know anything about The Ashland Fly Shop? There are two different websites with different addresses but using the same name and logo. They have separate online stores too. It seemed really strange to me so I didn't order from them.

I looked at the sites again just now and one of them lists a single family home in Danvers, MA as it's address. The contact phone number is missing a digit too. Something weird going on here too. Edit: I called them. The legit website is just ashlandflyshop The ashland-fly one is a total scam targeting their business. sbcbmx112
Unfortunately this is a super common type of scam these days. They love to target two of my biggest hobbies- fishing and mountain biking. While the red flags are often glaring, it is always a good idea to do a Whois lookup of any website from which you are considering ordering. For instance, fishermensale[dot]com was registered only a couple months ago and expires after a single year. Proper businesses will register sites for long periods of time, as in decades. Additionally the registrant has obfuscated their identity and not provided any contact information. Everything is redacted except this bit: Yep. sbcbmx112 and EricDice

I am not going to link the fake siite, and maybe they already got it taken down (hopefully) but I recently ran into the fake version of SWE and emailed them to let them know. They were aware and working on getting it taken down.
albacized
Funny thing that this thread came up - I went to look at the Bears Den Fly shop earlier and found myself in a website that looked completely different...had a link that said 'click here for detour to our shop', which I avoided, and backed out of that site immediately,,,there was some fly fishing content as it advertised a new TFO rod that was just released...I then found the link I usually use and it turned out to be the website as I had always known it.... not sure what was up with the other site, but didn't want to risk finding out
JerseyJeb
Just FYI: Anytime you come across a hostile website you should not post a working URL for it. This site is crawled by bots for search services like Google and Bing, when it comes across the hostile website on a legit site like this it will boost the SEO for the hostile website. In some cases if complaining about the scammer gets enough traffic it will give a noticeable boost in search traffic towards the scammers. SEO is “search engine optimization” for the non-technophiles. The link wouldn’t make it into the post anyway. Links outside of SOL or a few outside domains Tim/SOL allows get “pinked” (apparently) - into moderator queue. I didn’t know that sites get legitimized through crawls of other sites though. Good tip. (I have heard that your site can get “delegitimized” via presence of links out to known scam sites. But moot point here - still worth noting given your first point. ) ——— I did hear that Google is the only real crawl service in the game nowadays. Supposedly even Bing uses the Google index tweaked to their purposes. (Presumably at some fractional fee to Alphabet.) Meh: researched last part for 5 minutes and seems untrue - Bing must do their own crawls. Edited December 22, 2022 by EricDice Beating a dead horse lol.
