Can you guys that tile fish give me some options on what party boat I should go out on this spring out of Jersey. I only know of the Voyager and they sell out so fast.

There's a reason the voyager sells out fast.

The Mimi, Jamaica, and Gambler have all done tuna/tile combo trips at times. Gambler and Jamaica did specific tile trips years ago but not sure if they still do.

Check the websites of any of those boats.

I guess I’m going to wing it and plan ahead when they post there dates. Do you know if they let you slow pitch jig for them? My buddy in Fla gets them down there. He swears I will get’em on the SPJ.

How deep is your buddy fishing in Fla.

I have never done it but I hear stories of 2lb sinkers taking 4 minutes to reach bottom.

Does a slow pitch rod even matter.

some guys do jig for them when you happen to have ideal conditions (no current and light wind, and not fishing particularly deep water), but I wouldn't go with my heart set on doing it. I you have those conditions, ask the crew where to do it.

Dropping a light jig down between a bunch of lines bait fishing and making a tangle in 500' of water might not make you too many friends.

As said, more often you'll need 1-3# of lead to get down, sometimes up to 5. Make sure you have tackle that can handle that, and enough to braid to fish that deep (possibly close to 1000') plus account for scope on a drift.

I know he does use a SPJ rod. Depending on current uses anywhere from 300 to 600 gr. jigs. I have a 7’ SPJ rod rated up to 500 gr. Paired with a accurate nn600 with 15 lb braid. I have more then enough braid. I just worry about the bait guys. I will bring a bait setup.

The little bit of jigging I've done and seen done was from the opposite stern corner from the direction the bait lines were going, 350'-550', 8-10oz jigs, cast as far in the other direction as you can, work along bottom until line starts going the other way. Like I said, only feasible with a VERY slow drift, which you won't always have.

I once heard of 30# braid being used, but never saw it myself. Usually 50 is the lightest you'll see, with some going anywhere from 65-100#.

Though I could see the idea of something very light getting down faster and less drag...? If you end up trying it please post the results.

I remember back in the day using 3-5 pound sash weights for tile fishing. We left most of them on the bottom.
