Are smaller Van Staal reels the new trend ??

Is it just me, or does it seems like everyone has started fishing smaller Van Staal reels?
For many, the standard used to be a VS200 or even VS250 on a 10 or 11 foot rod... and a VS150 on 8 & 9 foot rods

With the VR's now on the scene, and even the VSX's and VSX2's, it seems like the trend is shifting towards many downsizing their reels.
I personally love my VS200 on my 10'-6" rod, and my VS150 on my 9' rod, as they balance perfectly.

What are your guys thoughts on the subject?  What are you using, now that there are more options available from Van Staal?

I use a VSX150 and a VR150 on my 9 and 9.5 poles

I use a VSX 200, ZeeBaas 25 and VR200 on my longer poles.

I just think  the shorter lighter poles are being used more then 11 footers and up these days.

I still use a 200 on my 9’6”. Id use a 150 on a very light 9 footer and imo the 100 belongs on something 8 foot or less. a heavy 10 or an 11 footer, id use a 250. I just like the feel of the larger reel. I know the new models are supposed to have a faster retrieve, but in the past, the old 150 was too slow for me, so you needed to go up to the 200 to get the desired retrieval rate. I also think you get a little better casting distance with a larger reel, and a little more power when fighting a fish.

The new trend is "light tackle". Every post on social media has to mention light tackle or it doesn't get enough likes. Jokes aside, rods are getting thinner, lighter and stronger so the big heavy reels dont really balance too well anymore on the same length rod they use to be on. Guys i know are using VS150s on 10 toot ODM evolutions bc the rod is pencil thin and feather weight.

The "standard" with the original VS's was #300 on 11', #250 on 10' and #200 on 9'. I believe that the introduction of braid was the principal "reason" for the downsizing trend

I feel the same way and this is how my older Lami rods were/are set up.

Now with the lighter rods on the market I think most have downsized reels to accommodate the lighter rods. I will be buying two new rods this offseason and they will probably be paired with a 150 and zx22 on a 9 and 10'.

However a vs200 will forever be on my 10' pencil rod, it just works and no need for me to change.

An 11ft Century is lighter than an 11ft Lami , same for the newer breed of 9 and 10 footers, only seems natural to take advantage of the weight savings and balance accordingly. With the advancements in guide layout technology and braided lines large diameter spool reels only offer the advantage of quicker retrieve rate, casting distance no longer an issue for the smaller reels.

I recently got an 11 foot factory Century Surf Machine Elite.  The rod is incredibly light and thin.  I feel like I’m stuck between sizes on what reel to use.  My ZB25 feels waaay too heavy while my VSX 150 seems a bit too small for an 11 footer.  I may look into a VR150, but the search continues…

VS 300 on 12' Lami;

VSB150s on 10-11' Century Slingshot, KNor'easter, Weapon and CTS S7s;

VSB100 on 8-9' Century Weapon and Stealth

VR50 on 7' Weapon Jr.

These balance well for me.

Not sure. I’ve seen a trend of people taking pictures of fish or whatever and including their vs on the side of the pic somewhere. To make sure people know they’re elite and dialed. Just what I’ve noticed…

I own quite a few VS and I fish them accordingly. They do; do sand and banging around the rocks super well, obviously the dunk ability is as good as they come.

I also fish shimano's Gosa and Twin Spin when fishing the North Shore. As good as the Shimanos are, and they are, they don't do sand and Salt water as well as the VS.

Just my .02
