Scott Sector guide insert spins

Rate this topic

Just noticed that the insert in the second guide (from the handle) on my 9wt Sector spins freely inside the guide. The insert in the first guide does not. Is this normal? The guide itself is intact, I don't think the insert will pop out, just surprised to find it spinning when I rinsed the rod after fishing in the salt. Fairly new rod too, fished only a few months.

No the insert should not spin. Single guide replacement is pretty straightforward but since it's fairly new I'd contact Scott first and see how they want to handle it...

I would say it should not spin but I’m not surprised given the design of that guide.

ps- mine do not spin.

It's not going to effect any casting mechanics, but it's just going to play mind games with you head.

Hit it with a drop of liquid Super Glue, take a toothpick and spread it out, wipe it clean before it dries.

It's such a hassle to return, not to mention costly. I probably won't until it pops out completely. Disappointing for such an expensive rod, especially considering I've babied it.

I owned a single fly rod and reel for 20 years, nothing fancy, but both held up basically without any maintenance. I did have to replace the tip guide at one point. They don't seem to make them like they used to, but they happily charge insane amounts.

Do what Capt Ray says above, super glue will fix it and you’ll forget about it. OR, call REC, the maker at reelseats.com and ask them for a recommendation. They glue the rings in with something, maybe they will tell you something different.

I might try uv flow resin not as thin as crazy glue but it will sink into the gap and set with the uv flashlight or sun when you think it's in there good

How could it be costly to return, surly the manufacturer pays shipping?  I'd bitch until they did if it was my rod.

I pay shipping + packing + repair fee of $65. Crazy. But I haven't talked to them yet, maybe they waive at least the repair fee since it's not really my fault...

I could understand that for a repair, but this seems to be a warranty issue, no?

Shipping is very high right now and for obvious reasons. So if it had to go back, it’s gonna be pricey with insurance.

I would reach out to Scott before gluing the ring to the frame. Reach out to them, and let them decide.

I agree with Fergal,  it is an easy enough self repair but I would give Scott the option first.   who knows they may just send you a new rod and pay for the shipping of the old rod back.

Dennis,

Do not glue the ring in that guide.

It is designed to be replaced if the insert breaks - which is unlikely.

Contact Ryan at REC ( 860 749 3476) and he will send you a video showing how the insert is easily replaced.

I would also discuss the issue with him.

Saying that - the fact that it does spin may mean that the frame is out of spec.

The advice to contact Scott is good.  They should pay for shipping since it may be considered a flaw.

Dennis

I just spoke to Ryan at REC.

Per Ryan there is no issue with the insert spinning in the frame.

They have changed epoxies 3 times since designing Cerecoils.

You mY have purchased an older rod from Scott.

He said that the epoxy is only needed to keep the ring in place during wrapping and is not needed after that.

He said that if it bothers you - just use a little epoxy or crazy glue to stop it from spinning.

The epoxy is not strong enough to keep you from removing the ring if it ever needs replacing.

Further, tg ge new ring will not have epoxy anyway.
