superuser
I might be going to Hawaii soon and I need a travel rod for shore fishing that I can carry with me and bring back. I will be fishing off the resort beach or rocks, nothing crazy but a 8 or 9 ft rod would be great as I can use it for light surf later. Is there a good quality rod that is worth buying for longer use? The other option is to buy a cheap rod for temporary use on the island and donate it on the way back, but I'd rather spend more on a keeper than a throwaway. Don B
You may want to check fishing regulations. https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dar/ https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dar/fishing/fishing-regulations/ Some areas allow fishing on alternate years. Some areas are no barbed hooks. Some areas are catch and release only. And never approach a seal. It would be best to talk to a tackle shop in the local area. superuser

Scubachris
I can send you a link but i'm sure the Admins won't like that even though i live on Oahu. What do you plan on doing? Surf casting, plugging, jigging, UL? I have a bunch of travel rods but it depends on what i plan on targeting. You're in luck that this year you can fish the Waikiki groin to Diamond Head. I can recommend what to bring but need more information. Best to rent a car and go around the island. Have you tried (or heard of) Hammer Bombs? Used a lot locally to fish reef areas. Do a YT search or i can give you info on the inventor. Here i'd use 9-11ft. I do. 9ft is all purpose, 11ft for bombing. On Oahu there's a reservoir up in Wahiawa for Tucs & Bass. You do need to purchase a fresh water lic but there's no salt water lic. I think even Walmart here still does this in local stores but i'd go online with DLNR. superuser and ecks

Please PM me the link I lived on Oahu for a year so I know the standard whipping rigs and hammer bomb style rigs. I have used them before and will again this time. I will most likely end up on Big Island or Kauai this time and would appreciate any info on local stores to buy gear and spots to fish from shore. Surf bomber
One suggestion is to buy one that fits in your suitcase … yes you can put one in a rod case but it’s easier if it’s in your main bag … I thru a hobkins and caught some small snappers …but off the shore at low tide and you may be in the lava rocks …I did trip over the homeless in front of the hotels while fishing at dusk on Oahu … lol lol lol .. tsunami made a 3 piece nine foot rod that works good and a 7ft 6 , that worked in florida … both casting rods superuser

Highlander1
Try and buy something worth fishing, many like the Okuma Travel rods, if you can pick up a used one, better yet. Even if you spend $150, bring it back and sell it for a $100 and you only lose $50. Or if you travel frequently with fishing gear, keep it, you'll only need to buy once. Don't buy junk, its worthless to use and you can't give it away. superuser 1 "Thats as big as a fish that size gets" - Russ WilsonRIP JM

If it's the Big Island, call the S Tokunaga Store. They moved into a store close to the Hilo airport. The store is larger than most and may have what you want. Their number is 808) 935-6965. When I travel to the mainland I usually FedEx my rods directly to the hotel. Don superuser
