Chunking rod questions

I'm looking to chunk for big redfish from the beaches surrounding Charleston, SC. Never tried it before, but I'm thinking an 11' spinning rod rated for 2-6 oz/6-8000 reel/ 50# braid can get the job done on most days. I would like to stay on the more affordable side, so I'm wondering if a Penn Prevail II/Battle III, or a Squadron III/Fierce III might be okay. Looking forward to hearing what you guys think, thanks.

If chunking means 8 oz and bait sounds like you’ll need a rod that can handle at least 10oz. I’m sure there are other rods rated for 8 oz that can handle the 8 and bait but you may get into overloading a rod when casting …as for the reel .. I only use conventionals …

Sounds like I'm not understanding something. All I am looking to do is throw one chunk and a few ounces of lead, or maybe a finger mullet and some lead. Should I be using a rod that is rated for 10oz +?

The Okuma Longitude was my first chunking rod (specifically model # LC-S-1002H-1) its 10' rated 3-8oz. Usually found for around $75. I'll tell you what. Its fat. Its heavy. But it will launch 8oz. and a fat chunk no issue. You'll be able to handle any fish you can catch from land. They also offer 11' and 12' models but I can't attest to those particular set-ups.4182609

I see that rod is 21.6 oz, do you happen to know the diameter of the grip and the blank just above the front grip?

Why such heavy line?

Not familiar with the area but seems overkill.   You should drop down a few forums to the Delmarva and read the current redfish thread.

Thanks a ton for the info, I'll check that out. I was just reading elsewhere it looks like I'll be able to get away with 30# on the open beaches.

Not off-hand. I can check and come back with some measurement specs later.

I appreciate that, if it's too much of a PITA don't worry about it.

You could look at the Tsunami Trophy 2 11 or 12 foot extra heavy.  They are rated 4-10 and 6-10 ounces respectively. I have the 11 footer and like it very much. Have used it for the same type of fishing, places 6 or 8 ounces of weight is necessary.

Might stretch your budget a bit but they are very nice rods for the money.  $145-150 I think.

I can’t see you going wrong with the Battle 3.  As far as rods go I would determine your total payload and find a rod that puts that payload in the lower end of the rating. Example: 5 oz and a 2 oz chunk is 7 oz. I’d be looking at rods rated 4-10. Avoid anything rated below 4 would be another piece of advice.

Being an old guy chunking Maine this summer I soon realized that my tackle : rod length, oz capabilities and Battle 6000 was to heavy to carry around.Rod is an Ande med/ heavy 9’ . I,m switching back to a conventional reel like I used for snook and redfish and a 10-11 ‘ lighter better quality. I ask my self how I can be so not happy with any of all the outfits?because I see guys with lightweight combos out casting and effortless

I’ve been using the Ocean Master 12’ from Bass Pro Shops. it’s rated 6-12oz and 20-50lb line. I use the conventional casting but they do also make a spinning version as well. I have a Penn US Senator 113N on it. I really like it and it’s around $179

Okuma Longitude Dimensions

- Diameter just above reel-seat: 21.3 mm

- Diameter just above cork (on the blank): 17.5 mm

As others have said don't be afraid of going heavier if needed. I like the rod cause it works well for me in jersey and its found on the cheap, but there a tons of other great options!

I use a penn battalion 12ft heavy rated 4-8oz one with a 6k and another with a 8k penn battle 3. Great rod that can throw a big chunk of bunker and 4-5oz weight a good distance. The 8k reel is kinda overkill for my fishing needs (stripped bass) and the 6k is the perfect size for the rod. I use 40lbs on the 6k and 80 on the 8K. Great affordable setup I recommend
