The fake meat industry is collapsing, is anyone surprised?

After its introduction with lots of fanfare and publicity, fake meat has lost its cachet. It was a flurry of sales as stores race to have it in their freezer sections and intrepid eaters decided to give it a try. Seems that real meat eaters prefer a real meat and fake meat eaters prefer to eat their vegetables.

Anyone here still eating this ****? Did anyone here ever eat this ****?

Bay Area-based food company Impossible Foods announced another round of layoffs this week.

A pioneer in the plant-based meat space, it will eliminate 6% of its staff, amounting to approximately 50 employees, as it seeks to eliminate redundancies and positions “that are no longer aligned with our core business priorities,” CEO Peter McGuinness wrote to employees in a memo, according to Food Navigator

Headquartered in Redwood City, this is the food tech company’s second round of layoffs this year after 15 people exited in January.

Impossible Foods did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment as of publication.

And it is not just Impossible Meat, the other big company is hurting as well. Deloitte says it is in part a rejection of “woke” food.

Once-Hot Fake Meat Sees Sales Slide on Price and Being Too ‘Woke’

Deloitte reports deteriorating perceptions regarding plant-based meat.

Just a few years ago, with a blockbuster initial public offering from Beyond Meat Inc. and the unveiling of an Impossible Whopper at Burger King locations nationwide, plant-based meats were ascendant.

Now, after once enjoying double-digit growth, sales in the plant-based meat category are not just flat but declining, according to data from Information Resources Inc., or IRI. That’s due to possible saturation of the US market as new brands hit the shelves, according to Deloitte Consulting LLP.

Sales of refrigerated meat alternatives at retailers are down 10.5% by volume for the 52 weeks ended Sept. 4, IRI data show. While higher prices are the top reason for the slide, it’s not the only one, according to Jonna Parker, a fresh food specialist at the market research company.

“Proteins that were cheaper on a price-per-pound basis did fare better,” Parker said, noting that semi-vegetarian shoppers that may have opted for an alt-product will now just go for the less-expensive real thing. With inflation, consumers have become less willing to pay a premium for faux meat. Taste and health concerns are also playing a role, she said.

Deloitte believes the industry is suffering from a perception problem. In July, it surveyed 2,000 consumers and found a decline in the belief that plant-based meat is healthier and more environmentally sustainable than meat from animals.

Deloitte also suspects that the addressable market may be more limited than previously thought with a growing cultural resistance to its “woke” status — even among those seeking to reduce red meat consumption. Case in point: When Cracker Barrel announced plans to add Impossible Foods’ sausage to its menu over the summer, it faced an onslaught of criticism on social media.

This is unfortunate. Hopefully they will get federal funding to continue to grow this industry with the ultimate goal of the elimination of meat sales in America. It’s an important step in the reduction of green house gasses.

I love when we make way past the breakwater at first light and head out, there's nothing better, the whole rest of the world just melts away for me.

I am willing to stipulate that Bernie has been swallowing nothing but real meat for decades, so this is probably not an important topic for him.

Bernie, Did they make fake meat tube steaks? Asking for one of your butt buddies.

My wife doesn't eat meat. There are some pretty damn good chicken patties that even fooled my brother. The beef grounds aren't so good but she does some magical stuff making tacos with them.

Hot dogs were invented in 1936 by Larry Hotdogs when he accidentally dropped a bag of prize-winning pig buttholes into his Dick Shaper Machine. :read:
