Hey guys

Set up recommendations

My 16 y.o.son is going on a party boat for stripers/blues.

Lbs test ?

Spinning? Conventional ?

I have a Quantum Accurist S3, will that be enough ? or need something bigger ?

Thanks

Typically on party boats i get by with big paddletails , 4oz mojos, or big flutter spoons. He should have a popper on hand in case the find some fish feeding on top. The reel is probably fine, might have a tough time with big fish but i think he'll be alright. Definitely want a rod that can handle the weight of whatever he'll be pitching from the boat.

A heavy spinning setup is what I use. Also bring something light for False Albacore & Spanish Macks if they're still around

7’ spinning rod rated from 1-4 oz with a shimano 6000 reel (or similar sized reel from penn or Daiwa) filled with #40 or #50 braid would probably be a good choice. I like fishing straight braid to short leaders but you can always add a mono top shot.

I can’t think of a better boat reel than a jigmaster 500. Since it came out and for 50 years after it ruled the head boasts for nearly all types of fishing. Your son can use it for 30 years and give it to his sone then.
