Fish love a cold north blow… right?

 Coming down to OI with the fellas for dudefest this weekend.  
Plan is to fish out front Thursday evening high tide.
 Friday morning low tide launching kayaks at kittyhawk sound side. Friday evening artic air mass moves in but by that point I’m not gonna care…

You driving back up to Kittyhawk to launch kayaks? I'd be going south. Check out the Bonner Bridge pier (free and 24hr) while you're there.

 A friend of mine has a house in kill devil. if the wind is too hard there we might launch off 64 or the coast guard station or just fish the  surf . We won’t be going south of the inlet

I'm headed down this weekend for a two week vacation and staying around Hatteras.  I don't have a beach buggy but plan to fish out front of the house and other beaches and may look for a spot to wade the sound.  I'd love to check out the new pier but I've never done any real pier fishing and I'm not sure what I'd need.

If your staying in Hatteras the pier is 48 miles north but I'd still recommend it over the Avon Pier.  Since the Pier is part of the old bridge I'd suggest a fairly heavy rod and line since you would be pulling fish up from at least 30 feet. I use a conventional for this but thats just because its heavier than most my spinning gear and when dropping from the bridge cast distance isn't an issue.  They have been catching a lot of sheepshead and some occasional red and black drum. Most bait is chunked mullet but 1/2 blue crab works as well especailly for black drum. Shrimp if the current will let you keep them on the hook. Everything loves sand fleas if you can find them this time of year. 

 

Other recommendations would be:

Ramp 55 directly across from the Mariners Museum (pompano on shrimp but there is a little bit of everything out there).  It is a short walk to the beach just over the ramp so you can do it w/o a beach buggy.

Oceanside of Rte12 ~ 2 miles N of Buxton - no ramp but you can park and walk to the surf.

There are some good spots behnd the hotels in Buxton (both on ocean and soundside) -mostly speckled trout and slot reds.  Good soundside wading first left going north out of Buxton. You can google map it to see exactly where.

 

Check with Hatteras Jacks in Rodanthe; Frank & Frans in Avon; The Red Drum in Buxton; and Frisco Rod & Gun in Frisco for what is going on locally (all these have websites as well so you can start checking them now to see whats biting).

 Frisco and Avon piers are much closer to hatteras than the OI pier although the OI pier is unique because of the heavy current when the tide flows.

 I’m not much on pier fishing but I used to fish the bridge alot 20 years ago.

 Bottom rigs  with blood worms, chunks on fish finder rigs for bigger stuff and jig gotcha plugs when you get bored.

Back in the day… lives eels guaranteed a striper when the current  was running at night under the bridge but it’s too early in the  year for that.

The Frisco Pier has been closed since Hurricane Earl in 2010. The Bonner Bridge Pier opened in 2021 - you'll need a valid North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License to fish from the pier.

I miss the Frisco Pier, like was mentioned earlier, it closed after repeated storm damage and was totally demolished a couple of years ago by the NPS.  A couple of other places to get to if you don't have a 4WD.  You can go to ramp 43 and park.  It's not a terrible walk across to the surf from there.  Also, go to the end of Old Lighthouse Rd. in Buxton.  There is a parking lot there and relatively short walk to the jetties.
