I'm going to replace the drag washers on my -"new to me" Penn 712z reel- with Carbon Drag washers.

I see mentioned that some folks are greasing the washers?

I have never done this before and was wondering if I should apply grease to the washers and if so, what kind of grease??

Thanks in advance

What did you get for CF?  Penn HT100’s or Smootdrag CF?

Either way, slap some Cal’s in there.

My experience:   If the carbon drag washers are not greased there will be some wear over time.  This shows as some black dust that collects in the drag.  This should be cleaned periodically, use break cleaner.

With Cal's there will be no noticeable wear.  I clean these periodically and re-grease.  Removes all water.

Been using Shimano's drag grease as well as Cal's on HT100's since forever.

I don’t have Cals, but have read somewhere that Quicksilver 24C marine grease works well too- so Since I have some laying around, have been using that for a while and seems to work fine.

in my experience, the grease makes your drag smoother and smoother to adjust - w/o grease you’ll have slightly more power to lock up your drag…
