Damn, you beat me to it. Off to that great politburo in the sky, or wherever.

91 ain't a bad run, considering his predecessors all died from "bad colds" a lot younger.

He wasn't an evil bastard like one of his predecessors, Andropov, and Brezhnev before him. He allowed Berliners to tear down the wall, didn't try to block German unification by force, and watched the Eastern European satellites break away one by one without doing anything to stop them. He also realized that the game was up after Yeltsin climbed on the tank and rallied a crowd, and didn't try to stay in power by force. I think that he was practical and pragmatic, above all else.
