Anyone noticing the mackeral shortage?

bait shops are complaining, sizes are smaller and just zero in the harbor (before sewage problem). Sabiki guys saying the same, seems to be going the pogy way?

Mackerel population has been tanking for years, very dissimilar to pogy issues, which have shown a rebirth over the recent past, spiking the renewed commercial interest.  

 

Good to see regulators have finally, hopefully not too late, started to wake up...

I have been having a very difficult time finding mackerel all season and never remember seeing it this bad.

Macs have been hard to get in the usual spots near the nh seacoast and southern Maine area all season.

Just another species to put up on the overfished list…. Sad to see this happening over and over to a lot of species. Hopefully the regulations next year with a daily limit will help….. only problem is it looks like commercials will still take whatever soooooo yeah not looking good

Down in Gloucester ma it’s been decent this year but when the blues moved in They aren’t anywhere to be found. Lately.

I will admit that they are harder to find but can be found. In deaper water and further out though. That will keep smaller boats in and some of us fuel concious folks from venturing too far out just to catch bait. 

 

I always bring a gallon bag of frozen with me and if I cannot find em within no more than 1 hours, I just used my frozne Macs. Timing is about that for them to thaw out a bit to use as well.

My son and I went out and caught some this week in our usual spot.  We do go out a bit to some of the further islands.  Seemed to be plenty of fish but they were on the smaller side, 6-7 in.  He had fun reeling them in
