Why would a fly fishing products company have need of “Social” and “Governance” concerns in their corporate plan?

Triple bottom line reporting and ESG has been a thing for like 20 years now.  At this point I think it would be harder to find a company that didn’t publicize a position on those matters.

Patagonia was, which is why I forsook them. 20 is overly generous. I’ll give you 10. My recollection is, the first efforts were just around the time that corporations were being shaken down for business dealings with 1930’s Nazi Germany. Recall that was circa 2010. Then they began to arrange some of this to run interference against activism.

Marmot, TNF and whatever umbrella they operated under (name forgotten) for awhile had an earlier environmental piece. Governance and Social investing definitely came later and discussing that error would probably mean moving this to the PG.

Go woke, go broke...it's coming.

I'd wholeheartedly disagree.  Patagonia makes superior products that though expensive (you're obviously a free market guy so they can charge what they want, the market will decide) perform and last. Patagonia is about the wokest of the woke.

After a huge debacle with Simms and their waders in May, I coughed up the extra hundred bucks for a pair of Patagonia waders and am seriously happy about it. Hands down, best waders I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing and as someone who enjoys the outdoors, I’m not the least bit offended by an outdoors company that advocates for decent practices in the places we all like to enjoy.

Will be interesting to see how the new players in the wader game shake out.

Skwala is a newer brand. My understanding it was founded by the guys that ran Sitka hunting gear.

I also noticed that Grundens recently announced they are getting into the wader game.

I like having lots of options in my outdoor gear.

A company like Simms getting bought up by a much larger publicly traded company will not be a move to make anything better it will be a move to make products for the prices at a lower cost to produce.

I am wagering that quality will suffer.

I don’t think many outdoor brands are going to take a position that is anti-conservation. They are also probably not going to deny climate change. Their operations are dependent on healthy environments so they are probably going to be environmentalists. Idk if I would call that “woke” or just capitalist.

Environmentalists are not conservationists

I've heard as some people mention above they've been having some supply chain issues last couple of years. I wonder if that plays into this?

I think the days of sending leaking waders back and expecting new waders might be over. Better go buy some seamgrip while you can.
