This is what I thought as well wasnt sure

I believe I've caught this, or something very similar to this in OC surf, late August, w/ school of similar size bluefish feeding on small bait fish.

Is that possible?

Black  on upper and lower tips of the caudal fin = blue runner.

Bar jack has lower black tip only.

As I understand it via several fish ID sources.

Im definitely curious now but I think it's narrowed to either blue runner or bar jack. Call it a blue jack, meet in the middle lol

Absolutely.  We get them in the rips at mouth of DE bay late summer.  Like you said usually mixed with the blues when they are on rainbait.  Occasional jack but runners are pretty common.

I caught that on a party boat in Tarpon Springs and they called it a blue runner.  Feisty lil fellas.   They filleted a few for us and had them for dinner a few hours later.

Looks like a blue runner, although there may be species of jack down there that I'm not familiar with.

We've been getting some surprisingly big blue runner off Long Island in recent years.  Usually, the ones that I catch have been two pounds or so, that I catch on floating stuff while looking for mahi.  But lately I've had blue runner more than twice that size hit smaller lures that I'm trolling offshore for school bluefin.

A little strong-tasting, but theyre decent in a ceviche or escabeche.
