Any seasoned veteran knows the difference between hammers and dinks.  You don't need measurements to tell.  

How big is the noggin?  Does it dwarf it's body?  Does it have shoulders?  Even the jaw muscles let you know what you're looking at.

Wonder what chomped on it's tail?    Probably a blue.  But I like to let my imagination run.

I do not think it is necessary  to take pictures, but everybody is different.

 

BTW, chum is correct…if you have caught enough fish you can tell its size +- a couple inches by just looking at it.
