Fishing in Non-Fishing Advertisements

Did you ever notice how badly directors and producers use fishing gear in commercials? The latest one being a Liberty Insurance one using the Minions. Or the dude fly fishing in the river after taking some advertised medication. There's basically three or four types of reels (Spinning/ Spin Casting/ Boat/Baitcater & Fly) yet in each one the spinning reel is up top, or in the case of the latest Liberty, a boat real is down below. Is it that hard? Has nobody fished on the set? Is fishing that unpopular. I'd venture to say reels are in the wrong position, or a guy's in waders in a stream holding a jig master. Seems like it's at least 90% of the time. Does this bother anybody else lol....What gives?

A crew was filming a commercial in the rockaways, and I noticed the dude  using a surf rod was holding the reel on top. I saw the fellow that looked like the director and mentioned to him that the reel should be beneath the rod and not on top. He said that nobody would notice, and I said that to anyone that knows anything about fishing, he'll look like a clown. To your question, yes I notice and it bothers me.

Every time I see something like I just go “ugh”. They don’t put the tiniest amount of effort into getting something as simple holding the damn rod right. It just looks goofy. It bothers me. But in the end, it’s not hurting anybody. Just an annoying mistake caused by lazy directors.

I have a bigger problem with the advertisers having no ability whatsoever to discern what appeals to human beings. I can only watch TV streaming or DVRed, I can't take it any more.

They pay a shi..load of money to portray accurate advertising. But it’s the little things like this that portrays a second rate advertising firm.

That commercial drives me nuts!  Just flip it over!

I need to relax, maybe go fishing (have covid right now for first time).

I did like Colonel Henry Blake's Hat and when Colonel Potter would tie flies.

Just makes me think their product is as phony as their commercial. Remember when car commercials actually spoke to the qualities of that car. Now it's some rapster with a car suspended in the air behind him. Their selling an image that has nothing to do with the quality or attributes of the product. Another page in the dumb ing down of America. MHO

I notice it, too.  I find it mildly entertaining.  Like finding typos when reading a book.

Makes me appreciate how few people in the world actually care about fishing.

Me too. I'm ok with the levity or the old senior getting a hug from his wife before he ventures into the river with his boat rod. Cialis..no pun intended

That is a stiff rod for the intended use.

There was one a couple of years ago that showed a family fishing, and the father and son casting with no line on the reels. You’de think someone would notice. :headscratch:

Even the worst TV commercials have nothing on some of the Amazon ads for cheap chinese fishing gear.  I saw one just this morning for a planer board for trolling and they had photos of it superimposed over pictures of guys throwing cast nets and somebody fly fishing in a stream.

Now that's combat fishing!

Yes, it is hard for an experience fisherman to not notice non-standard fishing techniques.

There's a popular west coast fishing show called, "Fishing with Dan Hernandez."  He's a nice guy and catches fish, but I cringe when he puts his right-handed conventional reel under his right shoulder.  Same for the Hard Merchandise and Pinwheel crew working sabiki rigs to catch mackerel.
