Sorry to hear about the theft. I hate that feeling when something gets stolen from you. If you ever get the kayak back someday, or replace it, you can buy a GPS tracking device and hide one in the kayak someplace. I've never used one but I know cyclists use them on their expensive bikes.

How long does the battery last? It would be a pain changing it every week.

Sweet kayak.  If the thief is smart, he'll sit on it for at least a year.  If he's a meth head, he'll try to unload it ASAP.  Check pawn shops regularly in a decent radius and create alerts on Craigslist.  Good luck.  I'll keep an eye out.  I already have a "Tarpon" alert set up on CL.

Homeowner's insurance should cover it, less the deductible.

Thanks!

and for what it’s worth - that picture (from 7 or 8 years ago) makes it look in better shape than it was in. The seat back and adhesive seat cushion were a little chewed up and the sides were scratched thoroughly as if it was tied to a dock for a few years. The crack is just beneath that black mount above the foot well….I found it when I took the mount off.

In general I don't know. I suspect it varies. I saw one where it needs to be recharged once every two years. The App for that device will tell you when it needs to be recharged.

Seems dubious that the thing can put out a signal that can be picked up

Did a little searching on the subject. Yeah there's ones that use Bluetooth that can last a long time but need to be within range of a phone that is using the app for that tracker like Apple or Tile to be tracked. There's others like Vodafone that actually has a SIM card but only last four and a half days. So Airtag or Tile are better than nothing, but not great. In one test they located the bike like two out of five times.

Was doing some sleuthing on Craigslist, saw this image and thought I’d be a hero. But alas, it was you who smartly posted it as stolen in the boats for sale forum.
I’ll continue looking.
