So, what y'all are saying is that you can catch striped bass on crabs in the summer? Huh, who knew...?

No, think you missed the most recent point made.  Calicos and other crabs were preferred forage for Stripers many years ago, sand bugs were never the go to and only occasionally found in the belly’s of Stripers.  Because of sand replenishment, calico crab numbers are a fraction of what they were 20+ years ago.  Now Stripers feed on what’s most prevalent, sand bugs.  Fishing calicos was much more difficult than sandbugging as harvesting the bait took scratching and recognizing shedders (softies were easy) or setting up shed tanks and monitoring them to keep a fresh supply of baits.

Even though “many” knew Stripers could be caught on crabs, only a handful would make the effort.  Most others fished the dark time with eels. And there were other methods used as well.

This is a pic of a fish I caught in the early 90’s, pre sand replenishment.

That's the only way to do it on a crowded beach during the day. Everyone nowadays is so damn soft with their rakes and van staals and braided line.  And don't get me started on the hooks. Back in my day we used wire for hooks.

You used wire! Wussy. We went hand to hand, or hand to fin, if you prefer.

SOL certainly didn’t start it.  This site does a great job in controlling spot burns.  The advent of IG and FB have full responsibility.  Along with the individual who decides to post with detailed information.  Many do it out of naivety or trying to be helpful.  But both come with unintended consequences.

I think this post is ______ on.

(I even left out the "spot" above!)

And the author, John Geiser, passed away in 2012 at the age of 80 years old, so obviously the method of using bugs has been no secret for a very long time.

Pretty sure that column came out in the 90's, Cartopper's picture of the bass filled with calicos reminded me of some of the bass I kept that were stuffed full of calicos like that.

Posted (edited)

Kept a bass in June. Two fleas that I used and a couple calicos.

One of the fleas was still kicking a couple hours later.
