I am searching for any information regarding the action and how to fish each type of plug. Unfortunately I have not grown up using plugs, nor do I know anyone who has. I have searched videos, articles, and on here. If anyone has any tips or can point me to the right direction, I am in great appreciation to all of you.

Thank you.

Can’t say the name of the channel I guess. Well. Look up some vids by Bill wetzel and Zeno heromin. Good discussions on how each kind is weighted, shaped, etc. good demos on how to fish, and even a little history on the plug.

Find a local estuary or creek that holds small bait fish such as killies or speering. Observe how they swim and feed. They never swim in straight lines without variations. Up-down left-right stop-start fast-slow, unpredictable movements is how to successfully use artificial lures.

This.

And also find a clear creek - salt/fresh/etc - and try them out. Slow, fast, tip down, twitchy, etc.

I use my kids’ pool but it’s dangerous with the potential of sticking a hook into the liner, but I have a knack for stoopid so I’m not stopping anytime soon. (Still, not suggesting it for others outside of those with access to an in-ground pool.)

Everyone has to start somewhere, pick one

You can start with a plug, and observe it's swim in the daylight. Take it out and practice with it, see what makes it swim properly and where you can use it for the area you are in. You don't want to use a deep diving plug in shallow water dragging the bottom.  Some work best in fast moving water, observe its swim and get a feel for it. You do not want a plug that will roll out. Other plugs do better in slow moving calm water cruising the surface till a monster from below explodes on it. Then there are the plugs you impart action to, the pencil, the spook the needle, the Glider that you work, and work, and work it, till she can't stand it, and takes it.

You got your Bucktail, depth, tide stage and current will determine the size ( weight ) and hair density you use. The fish will determine the action and retrieve you make to make her want to take it.

Here's a old post from a member here that will explain some plugs for you.

Enjoy the read

Thank you everyone for all the tips. I am finding more out now in the past few hours than I have in a week. Thank you again. I do not live near salt water, so all my fishing is done with freshwater striper. I have caught them on pencil poppers, trying to expand my arsenal of lures to what you north east guys do. I hope to come up that way one day to try out what I have learned on the salt.

Your quite welcome.

Just noticed your from Texas. What are you fishing for under what type of conditions.

I did a lot of bait fishing back years ago; till one night I was at the waters edge holding my rod waiting for a bite. I stood there for hours with out a bite just changing my bait every 15-20 minutes or so. As I stood there a surfcaster approached working the beach plugging nailing a fish on both sides of me as he walked by. It was then I realized there was something to plugging as well as bait fishing. Needless to say I have been plugging for about 15 years or so  and still learning. Years ago I use to walk the shore line during January and February at low tide getting a feel for new areas I planed to fish.

Back then I did exactly what I recommended to you as your approach to plugging. Pick a plug you feel will work in your area, a well stocked Bait and tackle store might help, and use it till it works for you. Research first try and get proven fish catchers, in proven colors. You don't need the entire color pallet, two or three should do.

What are you fishing for in Texas, and what's the area like where you like to fish.

Try rubber.  Mr. Wiggly

You'll have to make your own because, I don't think they are no longer sold

Thank you.

I suggest you find a spot that's close and use this as you "testing" spot.

Bring all your plugs and test them one at a time.

You should know how they cast how they retrieve and what they feel like retrieving. This is when you experiment with rod positions and speeds and twitching your rod tip.

When you're actually fishing you should have all the guess work done.

Have fun!
