That Abbott plant had been shut down after a voluntary recall. The baby deaths in question (two?) haven't been tied to the plant's formula, but the FDA decided to do a detailed plant inspection.

Believe it or not, the FDA has been inspecting things, and sometimes shutting them down or requiring a recall, for a long time.

You make it sound like it happens all the time. The flippant Biden FDA chief shuts down a baby formula plant causing national shortages and extreme hardship and medical situations for infants, and it's "oh well, they've been doing it for a long time".

Biden should be on the phone getting Abbott what it needs to get back up and running ASAP. Then he should turn to his appointed FDA czar and fire him.

The FDA has been spending too much of its time for a decade or so on the D and not the F in its mandate.

C'mon.  What could go wrong?  I'm sure that China confiscated and buried that boat load (figure of speech) of melamine that they were adulterating powdered infant milk formula with, back around 2008.  They do a mea culpa and move on from that fiasco.  Right?

Wrong!

If the shut down had anything to do with their formula killing two babies but it didn’t so why did Biden’s FDA keep the plant shut down until they created the Baby Formula crisis and what deal did they have to make with the Biden administration to open up again?

Enquiring minds want to know!

So who wants to bet that Biden will now take credit for solving the formula “crisis”??

While blaming Trump and locking up some small-time chump for what Biden and Pelosi will call “price-gouging”. They do anything to crawl out from under problems they create. Scumbags being scumbags.

A Trump administration might have. I don’t see him asleep at the switch on something like this the way Biden was.  It’s right in his wheelhouse, having not been in government for decades.

I dont believe that an FDA under a republican administration would have performed any faster.  Chalk this one up to bad government.

You don't think Trump would have dispatched someone to run point on this the second he caught a whiff of a  problem of this magnitude?

Joe did what?  Let the fda do its thing.  Waiting for the blue ribbon panel now in traditional Pol fasion...

These are all pretty basic questions. If only there were an independent competent press.

Govt. should appoint someone to research how the yenta bitches feed & fed their babies where formula isn't or wasn't yet available.

Should be a tit job.

You ever hear of a baby’s intestines bleeding if he has anything besides formula? Or a mother’s milk lacking something the baby needs to survive?

Sure thing,  all Biden's fault.

"....The Food and Drug Administration on Monday reached an agreement with Abbott Laboratories on the steps needed to reopen the company’s shuttered baby formula plant, which could begin to ease the shortage of infant formula that has frightened and exasperated parents nationwide.

The F.D.A. said it expected Abbott to restart production in about two weeks, and was poised to review progress at the plant in Sturgis, Mich. It has been shut down since February after several babies who had consumed formula that had been produced there fell ill and two died.

The agreement stems from a U.S. Department of Justice complaint and consent decree with the company and three of its executives. Those court records say the F.D.A. found a deadly bacteria, called cronobacter, in the plant in February and the company found more tranches of the bacteria later that month.

According to the complaint, the same Sturgis factory had also produced two batches of formula in the summer of 2019 and 2020 on different production equipment that tested positive for the bacteria.

...As frustration at the crib side and in grocery aisles grew, the agency has been in a race to replenish depleted supplies that have become political fodder for Republicans against the Biden administration....

...Problems at the Abbott Sturgis plant surfaced in September during the F.D.A.’s first routine inspection there since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Inspectors discovered standing water inside the plant and personnel working directly with formula without proper hand hygiene, according to agency documents.

The following month, a whistleblower who worked at the plant filed a complaint under the Food Safety Modernization Act claiming that plant leaders celebrated concealing information from the F.D.A. and omitted key information from official documents.

The F.D.A. returned to the plant on Jan. 31 and discovered persistent problems, including the presence of cronobacter bacteria near production lines, according to agency records..."  NYTs, F.D.A. and Abbott Reach Agreement on Baby Formula to Try to Ease Shortage

The company said production could resume in about 2 weeks and store shelves would be restocked several weeks later."

One plant? This can’t be about one plant.

It’s a big effing plant, and remember infants drink ounces at a time. It’s not like an adult downing a 30-pack daily.
