I used Orvis Carabiner tape measure that goes up to 40”. Serves as a carabiner too and can be easily attached to D-ring of the surf belt.

Depends on the water temperature….


 

 

I found a keychain mini tape measure that is about 1”x1” and less than a 1/2 inch thick at a Tackle World a few years ago. Fits in my pocket without being annoying.
