Most people were calling them frigate mackerel which look nearly identical to bullet tuna.

Found these guys off the beach in Montauk. Thought they were frigate mackerel for sure, but over a year later you may have changed my mind. They also look exactly like tiny albies. Watching them feed was cool, a bunch of mouths and sets of eyes zipping up and down the shore.

  • 1 year later...

Any of you albie sharpies in here have any strong feelings about albies in the rain?

It may be a moot point with the big surf last week the water is probably dirty enough for rain to not have to much impact but I'd like to get out there.

I may take a ride and poke around regardless.

I don’t think fishing for them in the rain necessarily has any impact on the bite. But I do think that they do not like low salinity water. Last year we got the remnants of a hurricane that dumped a lot of water on us just at the point I expected them to start showing in buzzard’s and Narragansett bays. They did not show up very well in the bays last year.

I was worried this year would be a repeat as we had so much rain in August but they have seemed to make a decent run into the bays this season.

If I was fishing today, I would try a mid to upper Bay Area but away from any large freshwater input sources.

Rain doesn't matter one bit, not by itself at least.

I was out today, briefly. The water is still off colored. I was going to fish tomorrow but with today's wind and the dirty water I won't fish. Wednesday might be good but I can't get out. I have a window for Friday am, sunrise until noon or so.

ps - i'm a shore guy.

Dave Anderson has an interesting article on the fisherman about rain pushing bait out of the backwaters and the albies having a second sense about it.

I only started targeting albies last year and I’m still an albie virgin so I just gotta get out there and fish. I think I’ll aim for Wednesday-Friday

Yea I figured the water would still be churned but was hoping to get out in the rain, hoping it kept some folks away. I think I’ll try and get out in the next few days.
